Congrats Blackey. You were spot on. Certainly Westley looked a better bet at the Oval.

17 should be enough to justify the West Indies series.

Right decision to bat of course, but I wouldn't have been too despondent to see Jimmy and Stuey on here. He's likely to get a scratchy 50 in the second innings though. Surprised SA have gone in with only 3 seamers at OT tbh.

I suppose SA consider de Bruyn an all rounder who bowls seam up.

Westley seems to be as close to a replica of Jonathan Trott as England has been able to find thus far, favouring scoring opportunities to the leg side in the main and unperturbed by grinding out a score to the degree necessary.

Don't think anyone would regard Collingwood an all-rounder. 72 mph? I'll play that at 65 yo.

They were likening him to Crawley last test but I reckon Trott is closer.

Fair point with the comparison to Colly, I suppose. De Bruyn is so new as a test player he doesn't yet have any kind of track record. How is it going for you finding a game of cricket, as you mentioned a while back? Hope you are managing to get in a few games.

Chetan Sharma too had a beard, but the hattrick was in ODIs.

Don't know if batting first was wise but England got away with it.

Harmisson (or Jones) would be selected, because they both were genuinely quick. They persist with Wood because they are desperate to find an out and out quick.
Sorry, I've confused you by talking about the 2005 & 2010/11 series in the same post. The 6 specialist batsmen: Strauss, Cook, Trott, Pietersen, Collingwood, Bell / 4 specialist bowlers: Anderson, Swann, Broad (then Tremlett), Finn (then Bresnan) series was the latter, with the keeper averaging 40 at 7 being Prior.

Agree with you totally re Simon Jones; tragic that he never played another Test after that series. I really hope Mark Wood's career doesn't go the same way, because it can't be easy for him to produce his best if he has to keep dropping out every couple of matches.

Cook nicking off against Maharaj might not help. He had probably done a good chunk of the hard work but now gets out a little carelessly.

Maharaj has actually been very good for SA all series mind.

The comeback is on as Rabada has Westley edging to a brilliant catch from QdK.

Two wickets for no run, both new batsmen on 0... and a big moment for Malan!

Just before that good ball that got Westley I was thinking will he finally get past this late 20's to 50 score..unfortunately he reminds me of many English batsmen who look OK and play quite well but always get out around the score of 30..they come and go. Never quite make it. Lots of them over time. Maybe I'm wrong and he'll get past this but doubt it.
