Excellent delivery from Rabada and a great catch from QDK. Malan flashes wildly at his first ball and is lucky to get away with it.

So you're writing off Westley in his second test?

Rabada's bowling well now. Both batsmen on 0 after facing four overs between them; need to get through this tricky patch because another wicket would spell trouble...

He made 59 in his second Test innings.

Yes. I know. Could have worded it better but the point holds.

I'd say one fifty and two 25+ scores from three digs on pitches that have assisted bowlers was a fairly promising start.

Still rather he was playing for Essex, natch.

Well yes.. just a feeling I had watching him and a tad of deja vu..to word it better..'Just before that good ball that got Westley I was thinking will he get past these regular late 20's to 50's scores..unfortunately he reminds me of many English batsmen who look OK and play quite well but usually get out around the score of 30..they come and go. Never quite make it. Lots of them over time. Maybe I'm wrong (it's early days) and he'll get past this but somehow I doubt it.'

In reality he may well make it big..just a feeling I had..more intuition than his stats of late. Bit like the other side of the coin some years back before Broad played for England when I mentioned he could be the next Hadlee..so many shot me down then. Naturally he hasn't done but fairly close if his batting was more consistent. Lightning above OT?

Maharaj has actually been very good for SA all series mind.
Elgar, Maharaj and Morkel are the Saffers who have impressed the most. Guys like Amla, Faf, QdK, Rabada, Philander, Morris have been a disappointment.

Very tough on Philander and a little tough on QdK. The former was excellent in the first two tests and it was only his illness that stopped him last test. QdK has been very good indeed behind the sticks and has 2 fifties this series but rather failed last game where he was pushed up to no.4. I didn't think that was a good move for the keeper to be honest.

I have a lot of respect for Philander, but, like Finn, Wood and others you could mention in any country, a bit of a sick note. QdK should do the Bairstow and settle for lower middle order.

Join the club. This is so old school. I love it. Malan and Root. 150-3 at tea is good. 150-4 not good. Discuss.

Malan reminds me of a long line of English batsmen who never or hardly get past 20..they come and go..sadly he's gone..unless he does something special very quickly..

Yes..down to Root, Bairstow and Stokes. (And Ali)

Malan is doing a very good impression of a batsman who isn't good enough to play test cricket.

Sky just marked Root's 5000th Test run by detailing the four English batsmen who achieved the mark in fewer innings - Hobbs, Hammond, Barrington & Hutton. Those luminaries bat, respectively, at 1, 3, 5 & 2 in my personal All-Time England XI. My constant indecision over who bats 4 might soon be resolved.

Root pinned in front by Olivier.

187-5. Stokes-Bairstow-Ali will have to get some pretty little 50s between them like our man Joe

That's a really, really sloppy dismissal by Root and completely unnecessary. Olivier is likely to send down a four ball quite regularly so there is no need to manufacture a shot in that manner. Every time England have found themselves in a decent position they have managed to lose a wicket.
