Curious umpiring from Dharmasena. It looked like it didn't carry but it was a close call. Soft signal out was a mistake.

I think 350 will be enough and we still have a decent chance of getting it, but yeah, completely. Some real wasted wickets today, Malan and Root especially culpable, Cook's was a bit nothingy although he did get a very thin nick.

Stokes is becoming Mr Consistent. Play himself in then go up the gears. He may have sussed this batting out.

Agree with you totally re Simon Jones; tragic that he never played another Test after that series. I really hope Mark Wood's career doesn't go the same way, because it can't be easy for him to produce his best if he has to keep dropping out every couple of matches.
Looking back on it, that team above must be one of our best ever. I don't think I appreciated at the time just how good they were.

Just read that if Stokes is dismissed for 51, his batting and bowling averages will be the same to 2 decimal places.

Stokes has been bowled right towards the end of the day. His batting average will end up slightly above his bowling average for now.

Devastated that Stokes was dismissed - I was really looking forward to watching him bat tomorrow. A good days cricket, SA marginally on top for me.

I gather Anderson will be on TV tomorrow morning talking about his end.

I guess with BT Sport muscling in on the cricket they have to do something to pull in the ratings.

Averaging 37.6 over his first three innings with no score below 25. What are you expecting from a new England batsman - Tip Foster?

England are doing okay, so long as they can make it to lunch tomorrow. Requires Bairstow and Ali to get their heads down.

No definitive verdict yet for me on the new boys, but it is absolutely the right thing to have a butcher's at what they are capable of against top class seam and pace.

Jennings looks shot to me. Hopefully Hameed will make some runs and come back into the side. Malan was a bad pick for me - I think Ballance at 5 would strengthen the side. Westley has done Ok and I'd give him the Windies tests.

Windies good opportunity to try some young talent - Hameed and Crane etc.

I wish Mr Westley a long and successful career. But like Trott before him, I wouldn't cross the road to watch him bat if it was free entry to the ground.

I think 350 is a par score here. Wouldn't put it past Bairstow, TRJ and Mo but they all know which end of a bat to hold. It's so sad to see Broad's batting these days. There was a time when he was considered close to an all-rounder.

Never wise to underestimate the opposition but I agree. Broad and Anderson
need to be well managed and Woakes, if fit, needs to come back in.
Same goes for Wood. From what I have seen of Hameed, I would say yes, give him a go. Form is temporary, class permanent. (I am not scared of using hackneyed old clichés ). Somebody remind me how many FC games Jimmy had played before his international debut.

Jennings? I remember feeling the same way about a young Marcus Trescothick when he first appeared. Not international standard. Sometimes it is good to get it wrong. If he wants to get on the boat to Australia he needs to:

a) Get a big score in the second innings
b) Smash lots of runs against county piemen.
c) Plead for a chance to have a go at the Windies.

TRJ has done well. but what happens if Woakes is fit? I hope that TRJ biffs a quick 50 tomorrow, gets another 5-fer and makes himself "undroppable".

Stokes impresses me more every time I see him bat. He is not the biffer and basher I took him for. Moeen should take a leaf out of his book. He'll get a chance to bat with JB or TRJ. 400 (in theory) is achievable. If they all improve on their test batting averages slightly ....England need another 100 runs.
