There is something in it for the bowlers, but it must be deemed disappointing at least to get 5 of the top 7 reach 29 and no one more than double it.... Add to that FIVE partnerships out of 6 already of 35+ and even Yawn's "bang bang" couple of quick wickets hasn't happened more than once.

As someone said above, one or two disappointing dismissals. Seem to be too many not getting far enough forward and "hanging the bat out" a bit. Malan driving at a ball without getting to the pitch, not that it was really close enough to drive, Jennings was tentative defensive push if I recall and not with 'soft hands' either

Much will depend on early proceedings, if South Africa can knock a couple over early then England could struggle to get much past 300. If TRJ hangs around a bit and Bairstow gets going again they could have a shot at 400 or not far short.

It's ironic he could get some runs against West Indies but the main call is to rest him (and Anderson.)

They gain experience thus strengthening depth of the side pre Oz.

However that sort of strategic planning has not previously been in evidence from England. Prep for last winters disastrous tours is exhibit A.

They haven't played Test cricket for 6 months, why would they need a rest?

Cracking the flags again up here. Hopefully YJB will be able to make a substantial score to push England up to a competitive total.

I would say 350 is par.

Also, given the rain, you do minimise your chances of loss...

Again? Fair comment about Jennings and Malan, perhaps, but when did Westley fail before yesterday and did he really fail yesterday?

Quite an absorbing day's play yesterday, I thought. 400 should see us take the series, I reckon.

Meant to be a night watchman though he didn't face many balls. Bit silly really.

Westley has done enough to convince me.

Sensational hubris to have a night watchman for a no 8.

Can Broad or Jimmy play a bit more sensibly?

Daft Broad. Looked like an old fashioned number 11 there. Should have tried to stay with Bairstow. Defended!

Say what you like about Bairstow's keeping, but is there a better 7 in world cricket atm?

I'm loving this knock from Bairstow.

This has been enjoyable to watch. Sensible, measured aggression from Bairstow.
