Have any of his partners this morning bar Anderson batted with their primary function to the fore? All three to fall should have been supporting Bairstow instead of batting like they are target setting a declaration on the 4th day.....

Bairstow was 33no off 72 balls overnight, he's now thanks to Anderson faced 137 balls and on 94no.

TRJ, Ali and Broad faced 25 balls in scoring 25 runs of the 60 added in their partnerships, now Anderson is 0no off 8 balls and England have added 41 runs for the last wicket......... Think Anderson has helped make it England's morning, but imagine with more application from the 3 before him what might have been.........

Would be good to see Bairstow get a hundred, problem with the line-up is you've 3 batsmen in Bairstow, Ali and Stokes who'd all like to bat #6 or #7.

Exclamation 99

Terrific knock from Bairstow. Class. Shame he's out on 99 but it's only a number.

Still, pushed England on at least 50 runs extra.

fifty partnership up of which Anderson scored 4, and should get higher batting marks (rating) come the end than a number of those above him.

If England do avoid defeat in this Test, and I mean that in terms of their tendency across the last 30+ Tests to lose a Test immediately after winning one, this partnership and Jonny's innings may well prove to have been pivotal.

Damn, fell one short. Still, as good as a hundred in terms of importance.

I was impressed that, despite the crushing disappointment of missing his ton, JB still raised his bat to acknowledge the crowd's applause. I've seen blokes stomp off with their heads and bats down after making 150. Good lad.

Just above par? Hard to call. Happy with that score but soon see if it is a good one. Shouldn't lose from here with rain around.

On the review it looked to have hit outside the line but given umpires call.

What a guy, Jonny. Bad luck to get out on a slightly questionable call like that. A fabulous knock worth more than 100 to his team in the context of setting up the match, even though the stats will show he "failed" to attain the milestone.

Also the first "serious" bowler to get a wicket over the age of 35 since Ian Botham.

Superb knock from Bairstow and great to see Anderson knock over Elgar in his first over from his own end.
