Probably the limpest display NZ have put up in a series for awhile. Doesn't seem to be much in the way of batting prospects. I'd recall Ronchi and Jessie Ryder. Fast bowling stocks look decent though.

Tom Bruce is starting to look as if he might fulfil his promise. I'd kind of like to see him preferred to Henry Nicholls at this stage.

Worker and Broom very lucky to get on the list imo. Even without them, there's still a few players on there who will need to get their act together pretty sharpish.

I see New Zealand have ditched one of their tests v the Windies next summer, so will now only play two 2-test series against them and then us, plus LOIs against both and Pakistan. I actually applaud this move towards quality over quantity in the test game. Lets hope the sides respond in kind.

I hope you're being sarcastic. 2 Test series are atrocious. David White is atrocious.

God knows how many ODIs we've got scheduled. Today, 3 more against India have been announced, plus a truckload against Pakistan for no obvious reason, some more against the Windies and then a ****ing tri-series with England and Australia.

White said a Test was cut as the Tests lack context. What's the context for this smorgasbord of shitty ODIs? DIAF, White.

I'm serious about fewer tests, a two test series v the Windies is about right. Would be a good tour for the points system.

In general I'd cut back on ODIs too.

2 Test series are utter *****. How would England fans feel about getting only 4 Tests a summer? That's basically what this policy guarantees as a maximum for NZ. Kane Williamson will be bloody lucky to reach 100 Tests in such circumstances, and he'd be the last Kiwi to do so.

England fans would be disappointed, but are you typical of the NZ fan? Lots of empty banks in the small grounds during the test matches unless it's England or Australia but packed stands in the bigger stadia for the limited over stuff.

I find that to be a little patronising.

Firstly, if it was all about the money as you imply, then they wouldn't have cut the England Test series down to two Tests. As you state, the England tests here are always sold out (apart from Eden Park which is about five times the size of most ground and doesn't sell out for ODIs either) for the first four days and they attract medium term tourists to the country, which ODIs don't do to the same extent. Perhaps you're also forgetting the unfulfilling two Test series in England last time around where two exciting Tests were shared and left most people wanting a decider?

Secondly, Test matches pretty much sell out for England, Australia, India and Pakistan. Where we don't fare so well is with West Indies, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka who all seem to tour here every five minutes. South Africa Tests are somewhere in the middle with Kiwis interested in going, but few South Africans making their way to NZ for the matches. Unfortunately, Wisden doesn't seem to record attendance figures for NZ Tests (I just checked a couple of mine at random).

Even then, checking photos of mine from previous Tests, the 2012 South Africa test at the Basin was full in the sunny areas. The seats in the shade are sparsely populated, so I'd say that'd be about 60-70% full. Bugger all people at McLean Park, Napier for the Zimbabwe Test in 2012. A few empty seats in the RA Vance stand, but otherwise full for India in 2014

I've also been to ODIs where the attendance has been paltry because our ODI stadia are uncomfortable and chilly to attend. About a quarter - third full at the Westpac for West Indies ODI in 2009, looking at the photos. They've even decided for this year to move some of the ODIs back to the Basin Reserve because the attendance has been so poor for ODIs at the Stadium! Christchurch ODIs are held at the same Hagley Oval ground that's used for the Tests. Five days of a sold out Test match vs. England or one, maybe two ODIs sold out at the same ground?

Attendance/money cannot be the issue.

I should really hit up the COO, Anthony Crummy. I used to work with him years ago when he was just a Finance Manager. Smart guy though, so I'm sure they have their reasons.

Sorry, i didn't mean to be patronising. Thanks for the detail. My suspicion is still that it has to do with money and generating interest. Swapping tests for ODIs has been going on for a few years now, hasn't it?

I think it has happened before, but not with such a risible soundbite as Tests lack context, so we've swapped some for ODIs... Which are contextless, particularly at this stage of a World Cup cycle. I fear that there will be no Tests in a World Cup year, as that's where our Tests have been trimmed previously.

I heard the context phrase used again this morning with regards to South African cricket and the career of ABdV. It's a bit buzz-wordy but presumably means something to do with playing too many tests that aren't seen to be of great value or interest to many of the players or, for that matter, fans.

A lot of crap tests and test series in recent years.

And now NZC announce that they're halving the length of the First Class Plunket Shield from 10 matches per season to 5. We're ****ed and David White is an utter ****.

Uh oh, that's not good news for NZ's test team.
