Hope he gets better soon. He misses the Australia Tests, though that might have happened anyway

Squad: MS Dhoni (capt &wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron, Rohit Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, Praveen Kumar, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha, Zaheer Khan (subject to fitness)

Yeah the selectors actually picked the squad most wanted for once.

Will be hard to take 20 wickets without Zak(history suggests he won't last) although I expect Aus might have the same problem so we'll see.

Not sure which spinner to pick tbh. Ashwin offers much much more with the bat, but Ojha has more control with the ball.

Your possibly underestimating the capability of the Aussies to gift you some wickets but I know what you mean. Sharma, Yadav and Aron wouldn't be the worst combination of seamer IMO but perhaps it is too soon, especially for the latter two to make that much of an impression overseas.

Not sure about Aaron in tests yet, looks a good ODI bowler though. Yadav looks the better of the two in tests especially in wrapping up the tail, a big problem for us on recent away tours.

PK should be playing too, no?

Yes, Praveen should play and he might have some joy testing out the technique of a few of the Aussie batsmen and make you right about Yadav. There is hope for your seam line up, the issue recently has been absolutely retarded call ups for the likes of Sreesanth and then at the Oval RP Singh. Absolute ******* madness along with persisting with the dart throwing Harby for so long. You at least have the impression of perhaps having something to work with out of the fall out of the summer here as well as the emerging spinners. You need to find a place for Rohit Sharma as well in the batting line up.

Yeah Rohit still seems the most talented and is good to watch, sorted out his brainfarts sort of too.

Kohli deserves a decent run though. Being KP lite might actually help him develop into a really good test player.

I've heard both of them have calmed down on the partying etc too so should have good futures.

Gambhir is the one I'm sort of worried about, no ton for as long as Punter.

Praveen Kumar out of Windies series and Australia tour due to fractured rib. Sounds like pretty poor management of the guy if he's had this injury for a while, after all he's not played since the England tour.

What player haven't we managed poorly?

Big miss for Aus.

Good question, the TOI was not happy with this at all. Zak has made a comeback in the Ranji trophy but bowled only 6 overs gingerly. Can't help feeling you'll need a couple of full games and of course a couple of warm ups down under from him if you are going to play him there. I still think the likes of Sharma and Yadav could cause Aussies some mither, but whether they do or not is another matter.

Ishant in form pitching it up could certainly get a few. Impressed with Yadav too on flat Indian wickets but it was just against WI.

Zak needs to be fit for us to have a chance IMO and he's bowled 20 odd overs now I think for 4 wickets, another Ranji game then 2 warmups in Aus and if he goes through that he should be fine for 2 tests of the series.

From what I have seen of Sharma he still tends to bang it short which isn't the way to go in OZ. Yadav perhaps doesn't have the skills to take wickets with the new ball. In OZ it is very important to use the new ball otherwise a drubbing is on the cards.

Varon Aaron injured and out of the Aus tour. Vinay Kumar replaces him.

Great stat from Andy Zaltzman for ddb: of the last 8 (eight) Indians to make their first test 100, only one has gone on to make another (Harbhajan).

Off the top of my head, I can only think of 6 recently:

Kumble
Vijay
Raina
Ashwin
Pathan
Karthik

3 of those bowlers. 1 a dodgy keeper. 2 t20 hacks. Meh. Good stat though, who was the other one?

Hmm. It would be someone who's made it around 05/06 I think as Kumble's was in Eng 07. Parthiv I thought but he doesn't have a hundred so not too sure.

Ashwin, Harbhajan, Vijay, Raina, I Pathan, Kumble, Karthik, Kaif.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;filter=advanced;orderby=start;o rderbyad=reverse;runsmin1=100;runsval1=runs;size=2 00;team=6;template=results;type=batting

In contrast the last 7 England maiden centurions were

Broad (1)
Morgan (2)
Trott (6)
Bopara (3)
Ambrose (1)
Prior (6)
Collingwood (10).

The last 8 with a single ton to their name are:
Broad
Ambrose
Key (and it was a double at that)
GO(d) Jones
White
Knight
Lewis
Athey(!)

Zaltzman is well worth following on twitter. I'm in awe of his statsguru skills: I think he knows his way round it better than anyone else.
