India hammered Afghanistan on debut, the Afghans mustering 109 and 103 in being bowled out twice in a day and facing only just over 66 overs

It's only the FOURTH time in Tests a side has been dismissed twice on one day of cricket, 21st time a Test has ended inside two days, and this the first time in India.

Simmons, former West Indian cricketer, points out "the learning curve is huge", did he seriously expect otherwise just because they are half decent in ODIs, T20Is and now cluttering the Test scene...?!?!?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/44495653

Record for Afghanistan

Tests : P1 W0 D0 L1
ODIs* : P98 W51 L45 NR 2
T20Is* : P66 W44 L22 NR 0

*includes a LOT against the likes of Holland, Canada etc so split :

vs AUS/ENG/IND/NZL/PAK/SAF/SRL : P9 W0 L9 NR 0
vs BAN/IRE/WIN/ZIM : P52 W28 L23 NR 1
vs rest : P37 W23 L13 NR 1

Quite why they got thrust into Tests doG only knows, not beaten a frontline Test nation, just about better than breaking even against the other Test nations and about a 2-1 win ration over the rest.

T20Is pretty much same as ODIs, played 8 and lost 8 against the top sides, 7-0 vs Zimbabwe, 7-3 vs Ireland, 3-1 vs Bangladesh and 1-3 vs West Indies so hold their own against the weaker Test nations but now crept up to 18 matches in various formats against the top sides and lost all of them.

You'd think the ICC would wait until they'd shown some steel against top sides in T20Is or ODIs, and come out with some wins, before sticking them in at the deep end.

Ireland may not have beaten Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa or Sri Lanka in ODIs, but at least have a win over both England and Pakistan, although I'd still suggest that their elevation to Test status is political and based on perceptions far more than merit. Sure you can take matches close without winning them, but surely you should be doing a bit better in terms of wins in a more level playing field of ODIs before becoming a Test nation.

Afghans having the better of it in the T20I series over Ireland, won 2-0 I think in a 3 match series with the last one abandoned - and one by quite a margin.

Irish are more confident going into the one day series, personally I'm not sure they have reason to be, but also question if the two newbies are right to play each other quite so much if they're seeking to justify their elevation ie they could play each other as non-Test nations, feeling each other now proves what?!?!? (other than no one else wants to commit)

They've been classed as full international sides in the limited over formats for longer than their elevation to test cricket, so not really sure of your point.

Also, there's no test scheduled in this tour.
