All gone. No categories now. You arent allowed to approach players under contract for the current and next season, unless given permission. If you make an unauthorsed approach the minimum fine is 20k, max 50k. But this has never happened. Ahem. On April 10th every year every county has to circulate a list of players out of contract at the end of the year to all the other counties and the ECB. If a county wants to approach one of these, after April 10th, they have to give 28 advance written notice of such intent to the player's county. And thats it. |

Shame we can't find out who these players out of contract are!

Good game for Broad with the bat against Derbyshire unbeaten in both innings and 91* in the 2nd. However he has failed to finish an over for Leics. Anyone know what has happened to him?

Dunno what happened but he finished with 131 runs without being out and 8-116 including a five fer in the second innings. Not bad.

When does the system of payments to counties based on their number of England players start? Seems to me that Broad may be moving just when he is on the cusp of a significant (we hope) England career and a central contract. So (say) Warks pinch him on a big salary for which they are compensated by the ECB even though he has barely played for Warks and may not do so much for several years. Would Warks actually make a profit, or at least break even, on this while Leicestershire get nothing?
Or am I misunderstanding how these proposals would work? |

On the overall thing, having more than two non England qualified players costs you about 25K per season per extra player over the two. But a player counts as England qualified wherever he comes from. So Maddy, Loudon, Ambrose etc all count for us even though we nicked them from elsewhere. Its not good. |

You're right about Warks though - it's a no-brainer. Even if he plays a lot for England he will play some CC games plus the 20/20 stuff and some other one dayers where he does very well. A well meaning scheme but maybe needs fine-tuning. |

Dont disagree with that. But the system still needs looking at to ensure adequate rewarsd for counties who produce players V counties, like us and Notts, who snaffle other counties products up..

I can see a business opportunity for someone to form a new virtual county who poaches top players and receives ECB money for their services to England. They wouldn't even have to play any cricket or anything like that. Everybody wins - the players gets a pay raise without the chore of playing county cricket, the ECB get their players nice and fresh and don't have to do all that messy liaison with the counties and the new 'county' makes money. Oh, and the other counties don't have to play against the best players.
Wins all round. |
