An England Lions squad will be selected next week for a tour against Pakistan A in the UAE that runs concurrently with the Sri Lanka series. It is set to be an experienced side and there is a chance that promotion-winning Kent captain Sam Billings, who missed out on a spot in the ODI side, will captain them.

Surprised no place for Tom Curran.

Has Mahmood been injured all season or just not picked?

I mean for Lancashire. Plenty of noise about him playing a role at the start of the season but I think his first CC appearance of the season was the final game.

It's all a bit mysterious - I don't think he has been injured.

Maybe he's just not that good at the moment. I thought he played some t20 and/or 50 over games?

He got a side strain in April, then aggravated again on his comeback in a 2nd XI game according to the Lancs website.

Potentially a case of six of one and half a dozen of the other, Sharky's post below explains why he was out initially despite all the positive noises about him being a key part of the plans; the fact that Onions and Bailey have bowled so well and stayed fit I suppose makes it difficult for him to break in.

Still, though, only the 3 North/South games, MCCU fixture (all of which he impressed in) and then a lone second XI game in June before today according to Cricinfo. Suggests the aforementioned aggravation was pretty significant.

Tongue won't be going on tour with the Lions. Stress fracture in left foot. I doubt if he would have played with the Overtons, Porter and Wood in the four day squad. Mahmood replaces him in the red ball game.

Only 20 years old and 40 wickets at 25.27 in a relegated side.

He should have been ahead of both Overtons - better prospect, better year and for those that care about such things seemingly a better family.

Big shame that he misses out.

Let it go! Both Overtons have stacks of potential. England love Jamie’s pace and bounce and craig’s All round ability. You need to accept it. Or seek counselling.

He’s right though, Tongue is similar to Jamie’s size and pace with a record better than Craig’s and a fair bit younger. No slight on the Overtons that Tongue might be someone we’re keener to see getting experience with the lions.

Can't really see a future career for Coverton at international level. He may come in and out of the ODI side, but he is generally too slow for tests.

Joverton will have to prove he can be consistent and injury free. When he gets on the pitch, he's very hot or cold.

I quite liked Overton in the Ashes. Yes he wasn't quick but he did have an effort ball as a change up that unsettled batsmen more than most of the other bowlers on show. He seemed to like a battle too.

I'd agree with that, I'm sceptical of him being a stalwart of the test side going forward but I can see him being involved in most squads and picking up a decent number of caps if injuries or bad form hit the other bowlers (which will probably happen!)
