Who is the face?
& if they were going to put Malan at 3 surely they would have done it in the 1st test vs New Zealand?

What is the PLF thread? I do know an organisation with these initials but I don't think it's concerned with cricket.

Surely you jest! A certain thread where Joe Root and a certain other batsman crop up a fair bit in discussions about promising but unfulfilled innings!

I assumed Northeast was the face, as in Northeast Face, the classic American rock climb on Pingora Peak in Wyoming. No?

I just didnít connect the initials, especially when the full thread title is somewhat longer.

Hameed is struggling.

5 (v Loughborough), 3, 19, 8, 1 and now 4 so far this fc season.

You can’t recall him in that form.

all doing better than Chanderpaul. So much for Lancs' top order.

Think Has will be with Lancs 2s before England.
That was before today. Don't know whether he's getting good balls every now and then, but you would expect them to be at least as good in Test Matches, if not better. Like I said expect him to be back in the 2s soon enough. Jones has already scored 90 and 100* in his only two innings for the seconds to back up a 30* against the students. Of course if Chanderpaul rescies Lancs today, that will probably secure their top 6 all season long on the back of "class is permanent, form temporary".

I think Hameed has to put thoughts of England into a locked drawer and concentrate on Lancs and the here and now. Having relative success in his curtailed first England tour raised expectations in himself and those around him. He’s confident and articulate in interview but still only 21. A few games in the 2nds could be the best thing for him.

The batting candidates

Stoneman 4, 24, 0, 29
Cook 84
Hameed 5 (v Loughborough), 3, 19, 8, 1 4
Vince 75, 12, 6, 33, 47
Root - yet to play
Malan 5 - in Division 2
Ballance 0, 82, 11, 19
Livingstone 9, 12, 33, 23, 48

Sam Robson (as the new selector is from Middlesex) 14, 5, 19, 5, 17 - in Div 2
Sam Northeast (as the new selector also played for K*nt) 17, 4, 6, 129 and INJURED
Bopara (as the new selector likes stats and Ravi has the 3rd2nd best average so far this season in Div 1 amongst non-wicketkeeper English players) 7, 26, 48* 84*
Joe Clarke (as the new selector likes to plagiarise and might in his haste copying down the averages might confuse England's best batting prospect with J Clark of Lancs who averages 36.2) 20, 15, 0, 7, 42 (topscorer) and 4
Foakes 46, 81, 34, 52*

Anyone else?

Last edited by geoff_boycotts_grandmother : 30th April 2018 at 19:59. Reason: Bopara now has 2nd best average by an English non-keeper, behind only Cook (1 innings only)

Cook started this season under a bit of pressure over his Test inconsistencies. However, while most of the pretenders for an England opening spot have struggled badly for runs so far this year, Alastair has outscored them in his first visit to the crease.

This is the thing.Cookís record for England in the last 18 months is actually rather poor. And would have looked markedly worse if his two double hundreds had even been scores of around 150. The problem is that nobody is making a case to replace him in county cricket. That said I reckon he will do ok v less potent seam attacks that he will be up against this summer compared to SA, Aus and NZ.

I'd be surprised if he get many against Amir who seems exactly the sort of bowler who'll torment him outside off stump until he's leaning too far over and unbalanced.

Indeed, I was thinking that it's not very often that Pakistan come across without a decent seam unit. The series could be a shootout with England's only chance being if none of the Pakistani batsmen can play the swinging Duke. I'm not really familiar enough with their current team to make a prediction at the moment.

Must win series for England, lose it and India will be very daunting.

Great to see Tom Abell play a match winning knock. Chipped in with a couple of wickets too. Fingers crossed for a massive season. He could be brilliant. Nowhere near yet though.

Gregory has started the season well.

Excellent summary, Geebes. I've edited it down for feasibility, removing Hameed, Ballance, Robson, Bopara, and Clarke. There's Stokes too of course. Perhaps there will be others by the time the selectors meet.

I heard that he'd been a guest on Sportsweek, which I missed, and was asked whether he felt under pressure for his place. The person who mentioned this failed to say what Cook's answer was, or maybe he didn't answer directly. Did anyone hear this?
