Add Matt Carter at Notts to that growing list.

Hopefully but most F.C. cricketers pretty much tear up club cricket and ought to score heavily in the stiffs too so I wouldn’t get too excited.

I don't think he was flat-track bullying when he was struggling for form so I hope it is cause for optimism.

Meanwhile the England skipper is in good form with 100 off 72 balls.

Daniel Bell-Drummond, talked up by some pundits, took 41 balls to score 2 this morning. Just the sort of 'head down, grit it out' approach that perhaps England require at present....although he did go a bit berserk as the session progressed, moving his scoring rate up to almost 38.

BBC reports: "Hameed had looked back to his dogged best in seeing off the first hour in humid, swinging conditions, only to edge one that lofted and swung from his former Lancs team-mate Neil Wagner. That is now just 40 runs in seven Championship innings from him this season."

That's a problem with abandoning the toss, the away side is guaranteed the option to bowl whenever a match starts in "humid, swinging conditions".

In fairness Hameed was pretty resolute before getting an absolutely excellent delivery. Pitch and conditions got a lot better so a chance in the second innings for him.

But yes, runs for Burns and Foakes against that Hants attack surely has to get some attention.

Foakes closing in on a ton for Surrey. England might find themselves with 3 keepers in the test side before long.

Out for 90. Not sure he's scored a ton this year, despite some good efforts, would fit right into the senior team.

Hameed now out to Porter for 4.

Livingstone lbw to Porter for 17 (out of 23/4) as well.

This is dangerous for Essex as (a) we had them 40/4 in the first innings and they scored 300 and (b) Anderson is injured again so England need a new ball bowler.

England have history of rushing Anderson back and subsequently (a) ensuring he is out of the game for a along while and (b) him bowling jizz for a couple of games too. He really can't be too far away from a test call-up.

Will be interesting to see what the ecb do, if Anderson is not fully fit for the roses game. As posted elsewhere straight in against India, a T20 match!! ... Or half a roses match?

I'd expect England to go Woakes and Broad with the new ball and Wood third seamer if Jimmy isn't fit. Porter feels like someone they'll avoid calling up for as long as possible.

Bess not exactly having the best of matches with the ball, being comprehensively out-bowled by van der Merwe and going at over 4 an over. When it's not turning much at Taunton he still has plenty to learn.
