Was reading that when Curran was injured they were thinking of calling up Topley or Fisher.

I could understand Topley, 8 at 17.25 (now injured) but Fisher is in no form at all, 3 at 80.66. They could have thought about Henry Brookes, Stone, Porter. In the end they went for Malan.

I read that too and assumed they'd made a mistake. Fisher has a poor record in all formats and should be nowhere near the Lions squad, let alone the full squad.

Fisher is talented and is therefore the type of player they should be targetting for the Lions and giving a taste of what it is like to be around the England squad.

So he's been playing for the Lions, and doing badly. Someone else's turn.

Not really. I would say a very good season in county cricket should come first. Rather than 'he can bowl fast, get him in the Lions' it should be, how will his body cope with a season's bowling? In the same boat as Garton. Both hardly play f/c for their county.

Cook, Malan, Woakes, Curran, Bess... how exactly is this a Lions side?

Clarke omitted again. Further reason to suggest he's going to get a test call up? Pleased to see Pope in there.

I assume Pope is keeping wicket. Strange to have 6 bowlers for a first class game.

If selected in Englandís third ODI at Headingley on Tuesday, July 17, Surreyís Sam Curran will miss the Lionsí match and a replacement will be called up. The captain will be announced on the morning of the match.

-----
Hope he is not picked for the 3rd ODI.

They have enough bowlers in Ball, Plunkett, Wood, Stokes, Willey for the ODIs.

Certainly looked at Cook and one or two others and thought much the same, can kind of go with Curran and Bess but have to wonder if it isn't going to block other potential future players (by denying them this opportunity)

Not entirely sure what they'll gain from playing India A either

I think this is a absolute nonsense. England Test captain playing for the Lions - surely proof that fixture scheduling is beyond ridiculous.
I hope to go the at least 3 days of this game and I wanted to see emerging talent.

Joe Root isnít playing for the Lions.

I assume the team has been picked to minimise any aggravation of the counties.

Yes I should have included the word 'former'.

I very much doubt that minimising aggravation to the counties was given a moment's thought. Evidence elsewhere suggests that ballcocks to the counties is the order of the day.

To be fair they have taken into things like that into account recently. The problem is if England want to have the Lions tour other countries in the winter they need to reciprocate during our summer. Giving international players games if the schedule fits also seems to be common practice.

Well happy to see Cook get runs, I think using a good innings by Malan here as basis for his retention might be a false economy.
