Australia win the toss and choose to bowl first and they've picked a strong bowling lineup with Starc, Cummins, Hazelwood and Zampa.

Not sure about the wisdom of Smith choosing to bowl first at the SCG as the pitch usually slows up at night there and gets tougher to bat on.

I guess batting first hasn't been working out too well for Australia so far though so they've decided to change it up.

Yeah I'm sure it's just because England have chased their totals pretty easily, not sure it really helps though as although Morgan likes to chase England have been pretty consistent in posting very big scores when batting first for the last couple of years.

Australias strength is their bowling with this lineup and you'd generally want to use your strength in the second innings.

No he can't. Out twice for 6. That was a dreadful shot, England needed a partnership to go to about 45 overs before the slog is on.

It does look like a pitch you have to get yourself in on, the ball isn't coming on to the bat well and there's been some variable bounce from the start.

Fantastic innings from Buttler getting to a hundred off the last ball.

Looked like England would struggle just to get to 250 when Ali got out but a great partnership from Buttler and Woakes have got England to 300 which will be a very tough chase on this pitch.

Have to say Buttler and Woakes have played brilliantly, can't say they've played it perfectly as we've no idea how many runs may have been possible, but they didn't dig in and try to consolidate, they played it sensibly which is what England need to do if they want to post a winning total and not their past thinking of building towards a "competitive totals"

Buttler 100no, off 83 balls, Woakes 53no off 36 balls and that when 189/6 after 38.1 overs, so they added 113 runs for no further loss off 71 balls.

Very interestingly set now, aussies may fall foul if the pitch gets harder to bat on. Not sure I can agree their bowling is their strength, this side has a few good batsmen in it and the bowling has so far failed to contain England :

ENG 302/6 off 50 overs having been 189/6
ENG 274/6 off 44.2 overs having been 157/4
ENG 308/5 off 48.5 overs with a 221 partnership for the 3rd wicket

So far the aussies haven't contained the English batsmen at all, chasing or posting, and not even from being right in the game - 113 runs for no further loss having been six down, 221 for the 3rd wicket, and 117 for the loss of two wickets.

That's not to say it isn't down to England's better mentality and several right components in the side, and England have won their last FOUR bilateral series with this looking pretty good to be five in a row, but had lost SIX of the previous 12 albeit some of the line-ups were experimental, still had the likes of Buttler, Stokes, Hales, Morgan, Ali, Woakes, Rashid, Plunkett and Roy in the lost series even if only some of them at times.

Anyway let's hope this game has something left in it, as I've said before though there's a world of difference between winning a bilateral series and a tournament, the latter you can't afford to lose knockout games and whilst England haven't lost in this series to date, losing any of them wouldn't be 'game over'

Didn't go back to old thinking which was to consolidate, have a dart late on. In days gone by they'd have settled for 250-270 from there, but that didn't win very many games so you may as well go down fighting and an approach which Buttler is pretty good in

Two great knocks at the end.

Not sure it will be enough though.

Warners becoming a liability in the one day format, absolutely pathetic effort again, ive been saying it for a while now, he needs to be given a serious kick up the ass, nobody gives their wicket away more cheaply than Dave.
Hes got some serious technical and mental weaknesses.

Could tip the balance back a little, that and if Moeen continues to get picked on, although he does have a knack of picking up a wicket.

Wonder if Rashid will be best impressed at Root coming on before him, guessing this is cause Root got Smith out last ODI but then Rashid got him out the one before..........

Maybe master tic-tac-tian Morgan is aiming to get through Root and his overs, although that may just take pressure off the aussies and allow Finch and Smith to set up a position from which they can strike for an unlikely win - or so it may seem "unlikely" post 300+ and at 44/2

The have to get the 19 overs of innocuous spin out of the way before the match is gone. Rashid should be save for later. Maybe even try Roy ?
