Ah well, Notts have an old face back to fill the void left by Fletcher.

Wow.

Didn't see that one coming.

Broad, Pattinson, Ball and Footitt would be quite the attack.

I thought if Notts were in the market it would be more for someone like Bell-Drummond.

GBG - yes Div2 might struggle a little against that!
Although I guess with the likelihood of Broad, Pattinson and Ball having international commitments they needed a replacement for Fletcher.
Footitt is a really good player who has performed well for a number of years.

Except that Pattinson has gone, Broad probably won't be seen again in the CC this season as he has ten Test matches to play between now and January and Ball is currently injured and when he's fit is also likely to be on England duty.

I was more intrigued by Notts love for left-arm seamers - they've now got three of them in Gurney, Wood and Footit.

Not sure Notts are really in the market for another opening batter? They've got loads of them. Hales, Lumb, Mullaney, Wessels, Libby and Greg Smith are all capable of opening the innings - and indeed have done so.

I would dispute if 6 of that list are 'Opening Batsman', yes they have opened but out of necessity rather than design.

Notts need to bolster their batting ranks next season as I suspect 2 batsman won't have a new contract after this season.

I would give Lumb a t20 / 50 over contract at best but likelihood is he would find another county willing to offer more.

Riki has been dire this season and I have also been very disappointed with Libby. Thy both need to have very good second halves of the season, despite being under contract for next season.

Riki is averaging 60 in the CC and played a big part in the huge total set at Taunton in the Royal London. In fact Notts probably spread the performances around in the RL far more than any other team, there was no reliance on one or two men throughout the tournament as a whole.

He was average in the RLC.

Take the 200 not out away and its about 30, which is fine in Div 1 but less so in Div 2. Same average in list A and that includes the 81 against Somerset. Perhaps not dire but not good enough.

I also think Libby has been hugely disappointing.

I think Lumb will still be there next year, but Smith probably not. I also think that Taylor is not as certain to be there next season as people might think

Will Taylor go back to play for Zimbabwe? I seem to remember th suggestion that he hadn't turned his back on his country, he was merely looking after his financial future for a few years.

Lumb should do one anyway. He's underperformed for the last few seasons.

Well, I have to admit that I had the same thought. He went back to Zimbabwe for a few days recently, and was tweeting appreciatively about Zim's series v SL.

On top of that, you have to take into account the fact that he's allegedly the highest paid player in the squad, and Notts might be considering that their money is better spent in other directions.

Stats don't give you the full picture...but anyway here they are (ranked on runs scored)

FC

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/county...;ty pe=season

List A

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/county...;ty pe=season

Unsurprisingly Samit tops both lists. Libby's ave is a little down on where it should be but I still think he will come good. Lumb's ave is down in both formats. Taylor has not really been used in FC (2 innings) but performed well in ListA. Is this enough justify his wages. Smith, although a 'White Ball' specialist has not played ListA and only 6 innings in FC. Wessels has performed better in FC than ListA, You could say his 202* has skewed his FC ave but hey he still scored those runs.

And like buses another one comes along....this time Smith calls time on his career.

https://www.trentbridge.co.uk/news/2...al-career.html

This will make Friday and Saturday's teams interesting. No Fletch, Lumb, Smith, Ball, Broad, Read is 'coaching'. Team something like

Wessels
Hales
Patel
Taylor
Christian
Mullaney
Moores
Wood
Sodhi
Footit
Gurney

So many injuries and retirements I can't keep up. I see that Footit is not included so I guess it will be more like

Wessels
Hales
Patel
Taylor
Christian
Mullaney
Moores
Ball
Wood
Sodhi
Gurney

Slightly concerned we don't have much in the way of batting cover, bar Root, for the remainder of the season. Granted it couldn't have been forseen but maybe look to sign an OS/Loan batsman for the remainder of the season once the T20 stuff is out the way?
