We all know that count stats don't always mean anything when it comes to Tests, otherwise David Masters and Darren Stevens would have been selected for England and Hick and Ramps would be amongst the greatest Test batsmen of all time. The very difficult question that the selectors have to answer for themselves is which of the contenders has the x-factor? Then they have to give the said player the opportunity to showcase their skills before ditching them. A bowler who plays his only Tests at Headingley, Old Trafford and Trent Bridge has had a better opportunity than one who only plays at Lord's, Chennai and the Gabba for instance.
I'm not sure I'd look to read too much into those figures of Porter as he was working his way back to fitness from a stress fracture of the back that ruled him out of the Lions trip to Oz. We've got a larger sample size to look at with his championship record.

Whilst Hick's reputation was as a destroyer of mediocre attacks, Porter is getting the top batsmen out. Look at some of the batsman he's dismissing in single figures the last time he played a Championship match against them: Chanderpaul 8, Hameed 8 and 1, Kraigg Braithwaite 4 and 1, Trott 3, Trescothick 2 and 0; Sangakkara 4; Voges 13 (admittedly not quite single figures) - all players with healthy test averages he's getting early.

Looking at St*vens recent encounters, he didn't get any of Markram, Bancroft, Latham, Collingwood, Brendan Taylor or Moeen Ali out last county championship match he was up against them. Best test record of a batsman he dismissed I could find flicking through this year's and second half of last year's K*nt scorecards would be Stiaan Van Zyl (test ave 26).

Coughlin looked a much improved bowler in The West Indes, watched the final sessions of two of the tests on the live stream from The West Indes board. He's got a much stronger action than I remembered and looks like he could easily increase pace.

Porter struggled a bit on pitches that didn't offer him much. It's really hard to judge a medium pacer now that county cricket is played in spring and autumn as they aren't even playing in conditions which replicate home tests. He's much wider of the wicket in his delivery stride and leans away from the wicket unlike Anderson during the delivery. That means the ball is delivered much wider of the wicket. I've only seen genuinely quick bowlers succeed in tests delivering the ball that wide of the wicket that I can recall. Sheer weight of wickets probably mean he'll get a look in.

Wonder what Ed Smith's view on him is? X-factor talent sufficient to ignore lack of runs in the first class game for his county, maybe ...... but lack of 2nd XI runs and lack of club cricket runs.....maybe not.

What would you call that success rate so far? 1 (Jimmy) and a half (Finn) out of five? Maybe an extra half for Jimmy?

That is concerning. We are falling down the Test rankings during their tenure and no debutant can truly be said to have nailed down a starting position.
3 no longer play redball cricket.
6 were spinners.
