Strange choices given their general lack of experience (Trescothick aside) playing away from England and Strauss' stated aim at getting England playing better away from home. I'd have expected some more selectors like say Owais Shah who played tests, ODIs and T20Is and domestic/franchise cricket abroad.

Have any of them coached abroad?

They’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t. How do you know that Shah and others weren’t asked? Does Shah even have anything to do with cricket any more? Does he even know how to spot a decent talent, or have any interest in doing so? It’s really easy to criticise when we know approx 0.1% of the story.

My guess is they’ve found a few people who they believe to be good eggs who are able to watch plenty of the county game and at least, in most cases, have some experience playing at the top level.

I think that's part of the problem gbg is trying to articulate. Jobs for mates rather than hiring the best options.

How do we know they're not the best available options?

As I pointed out: criticising when you know nothing of the availability of anyone is rather pointless.

Are Newell and Fraser still involved? GBG will be happy if they're not.

As far as I can tell there is still one full time selector to be appointed so assume Newell and Fraser are still helping out until then.

They might be the best options, they might have been tapped on the shoulder. If either case is true it might be worrying, or it could be great.

Surprised they didn’t approach members of this forum. Some of us are expert, infallible spotters of talent with the ability to sense how well the chosen players will adapt to playing at the higher level. And are never wrong.

Whoever does the job, spotting talent in county cricket is going to require a pretty big magnifying glass.

Who likes Root at 3? Yesterday he came in at the 2nd over.

Could this work?

Opener (Gubbins)
Opener (Burns)
Cook
Root
Buttler
Stokes
Bairstow

I think it could. But people will say that Root should be at 3, that Cook is our best opener, and that Jonny B. is wasted at 7.

On the radio yesterday Vaughan was saying that before this test England had problems at 2 and 3, but that now they have problems at 3, 4, and 5 because the players in all those positions are batting too high. And of course they still have the problem at 2.

Always listen to Vaughan. And then listen out for a complete volte-face within days.
