Visiting All Of The Counties

I'm visiting friends in Somerset next week and we're off to see a game at Southampton so I'll be ticking Hampshire off the list. I'll still have seven to do, mainly in the South East.

I live in West Yorkshire so there's only Headingley and Old Trafford that are easy to get to apart from some out grounds such as Chesterfield. Even my home county of Durham is two hours away.

Anyway, the counties I currently have left are:

Essex
Hampshire
Kent
Middlesex
Northants
Surrey
Sussex
Warwickshire

Anyone done all of the counties?

I know Prince of Denmark has done the works.

I'm missing Durham, and also Leicestershire...with four aborted trips to Grace Road in the last five years, I've now accepted it's just not meant to be.

Ha! I'd persist, I've only been to Grace Road once but I thought it was great in a slightly old fashioned way.

But then I like old fashioned.

The Riverside is well worth a trip...it's beautiful when the trees are out.

Thanks, HM.

If you're planning Kent in the near future, I'd jump at Tunbridge Wells before that delightful ground is pushed off the county circuit. Canterbury, once a serious contender for the finest ground in England, is sadly a pale shadow of its former glory.

I concur, Tunbridge wells is a fabulous ground.

Have only done 6 fc's (hants, sussex, surrey, middlesex, gloucs and kent) but have also done dorset, berks, bucks, oxon, wilts and bedfordshire in the mc's. Hertfordshire and devon are on the list for next summer.

I have only done four so far which is quite slack.

Glamorgan, Surrey, Middlesex and Durham.

Thanks chaps! Kent is probably the hardest of all for me to get to...but I'll bear Tunbridge Wells in mind.

I'm planning my first foray into minor counties cricket soon...Cumberland at Sedbergh. It's a lovely little place so I'm really looking forward to that one.

This thread has reminded me of an old favourite that hasn't seen the light of day for a while. Grounds, rather than counties.

I've done them all, though it's been a poor year, so I've only seen one day's play this year.

A few months ago I worked out the last time I went to each of the main counties HQ:

2016: Lancs, Middx, Notts, Surrey, Warks, Yorks (though was at Scarbados on Sunday);
2015: Derbyshire, Gloucs;
2014: Leics, Worcs;
2012: Durham (which was the last county I needed), Somerset;
2011: Essex, Northants;
2005: Glamorgan (though have been to Colwyn Bay since, in 2014), Hants;
2004: Kent, Sussex (though have been to Horsham since, in 2012).

Was surprised it had been that long since I had been to Canterbury or Hove.

The ground looks beautiful, but I've not been there when a game has been on as yet.

Done:

Derbyshire
Durham*
Essex
Gloucestershire+
Kent
Lancashire
Leicestershire
Middlesex
Surrey
Sussex
Yorkshire

*Though this was for an England match, not Durham.
+This was at Cheltenham, not Bristol.

A couple of years ago I met someone at The Oval who had a grid system written out, with all the counties listed across and down. His objective was to see not just all the counties (well I think he'd long done that) but all the counties versus all the counties.

So, Derbyshire v Durham, Essex, Glamorgan, etc. And likewise Durham v Derbyshire, etc. By my reckoning that's 306 matches to complete the set. And these days some north-south games, such as Derbyshire v Middlesex, could take years to turn up in any format.

Nope but it is definitely an ambition of mine.

The county grounds that I have watched cricket at are Lords, The Oval, Edgbaston and Trent Bridge. I need to start visiting some of the smaller, non international grounds.

I completed the set of main first class county grounds with a visit to Chelmsford in 2011. It's the third closest to my home, but with Surrey often playing in a different division and often playing Essex at Colchester instead it had eluded me. (The reputation of Chelmsford for attracting an idiot element for 50/20 overs matches put me off attending any of those.)

The only current f/c venue of significance I haven't done is Colwyn Bay. Surrey played there in 2014, but unfortunately I wasn't free to go due to other commitments. I believe that's our only visit and doubt we'll ever play there again.

I found my list of ground visited on the similar thread dating from 2011 and have updated it:

DERBYSHIRE
Derby, Chesterfield

DURHAM
Riverside

ESSEX:
Chelmsford, Colchester

GLAMORGAN
Cardiff, Swansea

GLOUCESTERSHIRE
Bristol, Cheltenham, Gloucester

HAMPSHIRE
Rose Bowl, Basingstoke

KENT
Canterbury, Beckenham, Tunbridge Wells

LANCASHIRE
Old Trafford, Southport, Aigburth

LEICESTERSHIRE
Grace Road

MIDDLESEX
Lord’s, Southgate, Richmond, Uxbridge

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE
Northampton

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE
Trent Bridge

SOMERSET
Taunton, Bath

SURREY
The Oval, Whitgift School, Guildford

SUSSEX
Hove, Arundel, Horsham

WARWICKSHIRE
Edgbaston

WORCESTERSHIRE
New Road

YORKSHIRE
Headingley, Scarborough

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY
Fenners

OXFORD UNIVERSITY
The Parks

SCOTLAND
The Grange

Most of these have been visited with Surrey. Notable exceptions are The Grange for a Scotland v England ODI; Horsham for Sussex v Derbys, a rare occasion when one team won with maximum points and the other got none! Also did Cheltenham for Glos v Worcs when the visitors won after following on. Finally did Scarborough last year for Yorks v Middx, and also ticked off Southport this June when Middx were the visitors.

I missed Blackpool in 2008, when Lancs v Surrey was abandoned without a ball being bowled in four days!

I also regret missing what I believe was a unique occasion to see a county first team match at Cresselly a few years back when Glamorgan hosted Surrey in one of the limited overs competitions.

I mostly only watch first class cricket, but I'll do 50 or 20 overs matches if it's a ground where I'm unlikely to see a f/c match.

Looks like I've yet to do: Durham, Essex, Glamorgan, Hampshire, Lancashire, Leicestershire and Northants. It will take me many a year to get around to doing all of those with family commitments!
