I'd have thought it would have been right up the Beeb's alley with their love of women's sport. I don't know whether Sky's monopoly on cricket until the ECB's next rights auction starts meant they were the only network allowed to show it.

The problem is with it being paired with the mens game the logistics involved in having a separate broadcaster just wouldn't be worth it even if the rights were free from a commercial prospective and sky aren't exactly going to do the filming and commentary for the BBC/C4/C5.

With sky having the T20 blast rights until 2019 I think the next auction is a long way off and even then it will be won by sky or BT (the only hope their is that BT show the womens and a few mens games on F2A as I don't see a non pay TV broadcaster competing).

The 2017 Kia Super League gets under way this afternoon as reigning champions Southern Vipers host Western Storm at The Rose Bowl. This is followed by the Roses clash at Leeds tomorrow.

Sunday brings a double-header at The Oval, as Surrey Stars v Western Storm follows the chaps' Surrey v Sussex match. On-line purchases are available only for the whole day but I've been advised by The Oval that admission for just the Womens game can be obtained on the gate for a Natalie* after 5:30pm (game starts 6:30).

* Yeah, I know she pronounces it 'Seever' rather than 'Skyver' but I'm still gonna use it.

Storm really struggling on a slow Southampton track, and no Anya to lead their attack later.

I hope the old school rave track played at the fall of wickets is featured throughout the competition....might make me feel like I'm in my twenties again.

Wow - there can't have been many limited overs games in which 48% off the target is conceded in a single over. Western Brain-Storm today.

Diamonds too hard for Thunder in the first Roses clash of the day. Fine all round performances by Big Brunt and Alice Davidson-Richards, Kent lass turned Tyke for this tournament.

Much vaunted double header today at Old Trafford. The women playing this afternoon, the men tonight.

Looks like the locals have voted with their feet:

Thunder v Stars has the potential to be the first close contest in this year's KSL, with the visitors posting a handy but not insurmountable 133, and Taylor back from her sister's wedding (so girly!).

Charlotte Edwards seems to be working harder in the commentary pod than on the field for the Vipers...two games in and she hasn't raised her bat in anger yet.

Dreadful panicky collapse by Thunder but credit to Rene Farrell for her penetration and also to Hartley & Marsh (the new Lock & Laker) for another good squeezing job.

Vipers v Stars on Sunday will be a battle between the only two unbeaten sides to date.

not sure why Alex Hartley isn't playing for Lancashire?

Possibly as Lancs have a surfeit of slow left armers and Surrey don't. The ECB seems to tinker with the six teams to make them as balanced as possible.

All six KSL teams have been in action today - sadly none on TV as broadcast time had been reserved for that benefit match in Birmingham.

Yorkshire Thunder, having posted a highly respectable 160, suffered a painful 10 wicket defeat in York. Rachel Priest hit 106 from 65 balls as Western Storm cruised home with eighteen balls to spare.

Loughborough Lightning finally got points on the board, beating Lancashire Thunder by 50 runs at Blackpool. I suspect their fortunes will be highly dependent on the form of Elysse Perry; after a moderate start to the competition, she today struck 78 and then ripped out two wickets for 9 runs, including the prize wicket of Sarah Taylor.

A close contest has been unfurling between the two league leaders at The Rose Bowl. Surrey Stars posted a disappointing 127 but, apart from the marvellous Suzie Bates, the Southern Vipers' batters have struggled against Stars' all international attack. Lotte Edwards' first knock in three games resulted in a duck. With 28 needed from 22 balls and 3 wickets remaining, heavy rain has taken the players off the field. If there is no more play, Stars will win by 6 runs on the D/L and leapfrog Vipers in the table.

Ah, 4 runs apparently. Up the Stars - top of the league. See you on Wed, ladies.
