I think Surrey will be my tip for relegation next season.

No Sanga; Tom Curran likely to be missing on international duty for stretches of the summer and maybe Stoneman (or even Burns) also. Is Batty due to retire as well?

Ansari and Footitt aren't necessarily stars but are hard to replace.

Sibley would be a huge loss.

Rikki Clarke isn't the worse bit of business but they'll need to recruit wisely before next year.

I think Virdi will naturally take Batty's place. I'd say they're more likely to miss Foakes than Stoneman or Burns for international duty. Stoneman will probably have already been discarded by England at the rate they're going through players. Then it's up to recruitment which lets face it Surrey get first pick, so should be alright.

Ansari is the big loss. As a genuine all-rounder at county level - able to bat anywhere in the top six and bowl long spells as and when required - he balanced the whole side and gave a lot of options with regard to selecting the rest of the XI. Borthwick theoretically might fill the breach, but he's been bowled sparingly so far and it seems to be too easy for opponents to hit him out of the attack.

So now that's Ansari, Footitt, Sangakkara and Sibley who will be gone by next year. Ollie Pope may emerge as a natural alternative to Sibley. It would also help if Jason Roy could be dissuaded from playing in the IPL again. It will be interesting to see who the new overseas player is. (And indeed which players Surrey approach at other counties.) Aaron Finch has done well as Sanga's locum, but Surrey have a tendency to look for a real marquee name wherever possible.

In an ideal world Virdi would have succeeded Batty with Ansari also in the side, but obviously that won't happen now and he'll be under more pressure to deliver. Batty will turn 40 this Autumn; I'm not sure how long he intends to continue, but he still looks pretty fit.

Guess who is coming - Mitchell Marsh for 2018.

SKY
Marsh, who turns 26 today, has played 21 Tests, 48 ODIs and nine T20Is for his country and has passed up the chance of playing in the IPL to make himself available for the start of the season.

Surrey seemed to have replaced Ansari more than Sangakkara with that signing.

So potential line-up for next season will include Marsh, both Currans, Clarke and Batty. Wonder if this indicates that they might be fairly confident that they can get Amla in, which they have been trying to do? I know he was mentioned as a potential overseas replacement for Sangakkara on one of their forums and would - to my mind - probably be the best replacement they could get. He would be a formidable Kolpak signing but given his current nick it seems unlikely to me that he'll give up on internationals.

Peter Moores could do with him more at Notts. Do Surrey have a Nash-sized hole? Notts look like they might and Moores has worked with him before.

Years ago, heard a vague rumour linking Nash with Lancs when Moores was with Lancs. So it makes more sense to me that he might go to Notts, notwithstanding the geography of the move.

Apparently there were a few rumours during the season that Surrey were interested, and they're losing Sanga (obviously not in that league, but 11k runs at nearly 40 is more thand decent). I'd be surprised if other counties like Notts weren't interested. Interestingly the Sussex statement only said he was 'moving his career in another direction' so he may not be moving county, but doing something else.

There is certainly a vacancy for a proven top order batsman at Surrey. Sanga has retired, Sibley left unexpectedly, Stoneman's availability could be limited if he cements a Test place over the winter. So far the only replacement has been Ryan Patel, a teenager promoted from the Academy who played four CC matches this year and has just signed his first full contract.

Surrey have lost a lot of players since the start of this year: Ansari, Burke, Footitt, Rampaul, Sangakkara, Sibley. So far only Rikki Clarke and new overseas player Mitch Marsh have come in, with three Academy players - Patel, Gus Atkinson and Will Jacks - awarded full contracts.

Next years squad as it stands is:

Gareth Batty (captain)
+Rory Burns (vice captain)
Gus Atkinson
Scott Borthwick
Rikki Clarke
Sam Curran
Tom Curran
Jade Dernbach
Matt Dunn
+Ben Foakes
Arun Harinath
Will Jacks
Mitch Marsh (overseas)
Conor McKerr
Stuart Meaker
Matt Pillans
+Ollie Pope
Jason Roy
Mark Stoneman
Freddie van den Bergh
Amar Virdi

Dernbach, Meaker, Virdi, Pope & McKerr all recently signed contract extentions to 2020 and van den Bergh signed a one year deal for next season.

Patel is a top order batsman who also offers right arm seam back-up. I believe Jacks is primarily a middle order batsman and Atkinson primarily a right arm seamer.

Why? It would be restriction of trade?
The idea of seeing Smith in CC is surely an exciting one? The idea of Warner playing infront of a "beer'd up crowd" at Headingly is "interesting".

It was my understanding that they are not actually banned from playing outside of Australia?

Allowing any of them to play in the CC or any other competition here whilst banned in Australia would send out the wrong message, IMHO.

Absolutely.

They may not technically be banned outside Australia, but it makes a mockery of the entire thing if they just **** off and play elsewhere.

Plus, they are cheats and liars, not people I would want associated with my team, no matter how good they are.
