I think it more pertinent to ask why you posted this on the Surrey thread. You'll give Sir Virgs a heart attack.

Stewart Walters will be leaving Surrey after they reached agreement with him to settle the final year of his contract.

I've just had a horrible thought.

We might not be seeing much of Tremlett next summer.

Arse.

With the signing of Maynard and the apparent increased availability of Davies in the summer, Surrey suddenly seem to have an abundance of batsmen if Ramprakash and Michael Brown regain fitness.

Assuming Brown does come back and opens it is looking to me as if Davies may be asked to open again in the CC unless RHB drops down to number seven and Roy, Lancefield or Harinath open. I don't think the Skipper would be looking to bat as low as seven though.

Tremlett
Nel

Wouldn't be a bad line up Nandos providing Brown, Jordan and of course Ramprakash fully recover from their injuries. Still got an unnamed overseas bowler to bring in too at some point.

I think it pretty unlikely now that Nel will be back for his final year though because of his personal issues and I heard that Surrey were already talking to him to agree a settlement of his contract even before they occurred.

Might have to put Dernbach in for Nel and then hope the rest are all fit and available at the same time. Pretty good squad on paper but it's well overdue for them to deliver on the pitch where it counts.

I am assuming Ramprakash is going to start bowling again and the Captain is suddenly going to develop into a fifity wickets a season bowler. To be honest, although we were discussing the best case scenario, in reality the quicker bowling looks heavily reliant on Tremlett at least until the overseas player is signed up but hey it's rare Surrey Members try to be positive these days so we can dream of Batty and Schofield skittling the opposition and Jordan being fully fit for the first time for a couple of years.

Can't remember where I read it now (probably in The Times or Telegraph about a week or so ago) but I read that Nel had been paid off for the final year of his contract and was expected to return to Essex.

Chris Adams has publicly stated that he's looking for an overseas spinner, specifically a left armer or a leggie, for about two years now but presumably hasn't found one he regards as good enough who is available for enough matches. Herath didn't shine in a short spell at the end of 2009 and Chawla's signing was vetoed by the BCCI this time last year.

Yasir Arafat signed as the overseas player in all competitions for the season. Not wanted at Sussex.

Adams has said he has been unable to find a suitable spin option, as Prince of Denmark alluded to, and with Tremlett's involvement with England now in the equation they have gone for Arafat.

He shared the overseas role with Rana Naved at Sussex last year and statistically there was little to choose between the two of them in the team that won Division 2, but Sussex have decided to keep the four years older Rana.

Looks a promising signing for Surrey: over 700 First Class wickets at less then 24, and a batting average of nearly 27. With Nel gone and Tremlett's availability in doubt I think it's a wise move to bring in a seamer of proven quality, and he fulfils the priceless modern requirement of being available for the whole season, notwithstanding the vagaries of the Pakistan team selections.

This means Batty will have to step up as first choice spinner, although I don't suppose many Division 2 rivals will have anyone better.

Possible team for first Championship match:

Davies
Brown
Hamilton-Brown
Maynard
De Bruyn
Roy
Yasir Arafat
Batty
Meaker
Dernbach
Linley

It's in the Telegraph as well but I guess the Sun pay for the exclusive plus their journos are more intrusive.

My only hope is that it was his decision not one that was forced by the hand of a paper that had found something out and threatened to leak it
