I beg to differ. The weakest lower order we could put out would be Batty, Arafat, Tremlett, Dernbach, Linley, which has some of the first three maybe a place too high, and that's arguably our strongest bowling attack. Schofield, Arafat and Batty all average 25-30 from around ten years or more of regular first class cricket. Jordan & Meaker are capable enough to bat at 8. Dernbach (a dangerous straight hitter) and Linley are the only two you really wouldn't want batting higher than 10. Our regular wicketkeeper Davies is comfortably good enough to play as a specialist top-six batsman in county cricket. If he's missing I'd pick Wilson at 7 to keep wicket with four front-line bowlers and De Bruyn to act as fifth bowler.

I'm not sure we'll ever see them take the field together, but my first choice XI would be something like:

Brown
+Davies
Ramprakash
Pietersen
*Hamilton-Brown
De Bruyn
Arafat
Batty
Tremlett
Dernbach
Linley

With Jordan, Lancefield, Maynard, Meaker, Roy, Schofield, Spriegel and Wilson plus various youngsters in reserve I think that's a decent enough squad.

PoD - I meant if you managed to get 7 bowlers onto the field at the same time. Surrey could be very, very strong this year.

Is anyone going to volunteer to bother a cow if they don't get promoted?

I liked the look of Lancefield as an opener when I saw him last year - a compact sort of left-hander in the Strauss mode. I expect he will get plenty of chances this seaso.

Yes, I liked the look of Lancefield too. I thought he looked a better prospect than some of the other fringe batsmen who are a few yesrs older than him e.g. Harinath, Spriegel. He did especially well as he didn't have an experienced opening partner, as he might now do if paired with Brown.

I'm told Ramprakash was batting in the nets at last week's friendly with Middlesex so hopefully he might be back sooner than expected.

They are far from a certainty; my point was more about their ceiling in that if they click they could be dominant.

Not a great first day in the final warm-up match at Trent Bridge:

http://www.kiaoval.com/news/tough-day-trent-bridge

A line up of:
Brown
+Wilson
Roy
Maynard
*Hamilton-Brown
Spriegel
Schofield
Jordan
Batty
Jewell
Linley

plus Dunn & Edwards used as bowlers during the Notts innings.

Not sure how many of the more experienced players will be available for Friday against Northants. Are De Bruyn & Arafat playing overseas? Davies? Dernbach? Meaker? At least Brown & Jordan are fit enough to take to the field at last.

I've had a little punt on Hamilton-Brown at 12-1 to be Surrey's top run scorer this season.

Ramprakash is 10-11 and Davis 2-1, but I think Hamilton-Brown is exceptional value. Even if Ramps were starting the season on Friday I'd still rank it a fair bet. And Ramps is terrible value at that price.

That's got to be worth a flutter. RHB scored fewer than 100 runs less than Davies last year, and he should be playing every match barring injuries whereas Davies is likely to miss a few on ODI/Lions duty. Only caveat is that he may get fewer innings than last year if we can acquire a winning habit.

If I had a few hundred quid to spare I'd still be tempted to put it on Ramps though, even at that price!

According to todays' Telegraph CC preview, Ramps is out until the end of May. I don't know how accurate that info is (I saw the Surrey TV interview with him in March, and yes, he's hitting balls but was not match fit).

If that was the case then opposing him in the bet is basically there for the taking - it's just a question of who it will be.

Obviously Davis could well rack up a lot of runs too.

Michael Brown or (if selected regularly) Jason Roy or Tom Maynard would be the other options. Maynard was an opportune signing but has little track record in the CC.

I think Roy will be an overnight sensation; maybe not this year, but within the next three years.

No Dernbach at the start of the season - calf injury.

Seems decent value then, but my one reservation would be that he'll be beating fairly low down the order won't he?

Yes, though knowing Surrey he'll usually be in by lunch (as he was today).

There's rain forecast over the next few days but I'll keep an eye on this and might pop down for a couple of hours at the end of one of the days.

Was going to try to get out of a work a little early to catch him batting, but I'm waaay to late for that.

And KP is dismissed by yet another left arm spinner!
