Clark and Johnson have been playing a lot of international cricket though. You are generally going to get good value from an Aussie in his late twenties. We're gathering quite a useful squad

Beer got 3/30odd against Yorks in the UAE thing. Otherwise it looks a bit of a miserable tour, though I'm not sure they took it as seriously as the others

Without analysing every match, your youngsters (Beer, Smith, Rayner, RMB, Brown) seemed to perform quite well.

Beer, Brown, Rayner, Thornely and Smith, all players to have graduated from the Academy in the last three years, managed to impress in Dubai. Holly Colvin, who is already in Sussex and England Womens squads, and seamer Will Adkin are the only two players due to graduate from the Academy this year. Although next season Matt Machan and Alan Wells' son Luke both batsman and Thorpe and Geffen both seamers are due to graduate. Machan played 11 games for 2XI in 2007 as a 16 year old! Of the nine players in the Academy I would tip Chapman, Colvin, Davies, Wells and Machan to make the grade.

I was especially pleased as out of the six players I suggested bringing in Beer, Thornely, Yardy and Martin-Jenkins all managed decent contributions! I was surprised Kirtley didn't play as he had played only one match previously and Liddle had already played three times and so could have been rested.

Davies is a keeper isn't he? We need more of them don't we

I wonder how close Beer is to making the first team this year, or whether they will go straight to Rayner as he's been waiting in the wings longest

Davies is a keeper who like Matt Prior was is at Brighton College. They have had some good keepers recently with Prior, Davies and Sarah Taylor all keeping for mens 1XI.

Beer will play for 2XI this year. It is just great to have three good young spinners on the staff.

U17 camp selected
The following players have been invited to an England Elite Player Development Under-17s training camp overseen by Andy Pick, at the National Cricket Performance Centre from Tuesday May 27 – Thursday May 29 2008:

Squad:

Zafar Ansari, Surrey
Michael Bates, Hampshire
Paul Best, Warwickshire
Sam Billings, Kent
Nathan Buck, Leicestershire
Matthew Dunn, Surrey
James Goodman, Kent
Lewis Gregory, Devon/Somerset
Imran Hassan, Wales
Michael Hill, Derbyshire
Stephen Inward, Wales
Christopher Jones, Somerset
Tom Lewis, Warwickshire
Matthew Machan, Sussex
Matthew Pardoe, Worcestershire
Ravi Patel, Middlesex
Luke Perry, Lancashire
Neil Pinner, Worcestershire
Azeem Rafiq, Yorkshire
Joe Root, Yorkshire
Adam Shepherd, Nottinghamshire
Ben Stokes, Durham
James Vince, Hampshire

The players have been asked to assemble at the NCPC on the evening of Monday May 26 2008.

Well done to Matt Machan on being the sole Sussex representative. He is certainly a player I expect we will be hearing plenty of in the future.

Lewry has injured his leg and won't feature in the first two matches. Who should replace him? There are three alternatives which are Kirtley, Aga and Liddle. Basically it is a question of whether we opt for youth (Aga or Liddle) or experience (Kirtley)?

I would opt for Kirtley as he has a proven track record for Sussex and has been there and done it before. He also has a good record against Hampshire having taken 41 wickets in 9 matches at 24 including three five wicket hauls.

I take it that was before he had to re-model his action. I find it a bit strange that since he has had it done that he has done well in the shorter games but 88-19-303-1 in the CC.

FBU - To be he has hardly played more than two games in succession whereas in the one-day game he has been a regular. The fact is he has the experience which neither Aga nor Liddle have at the moment.

According to the Hate Mail today, Michael Yardy can recognise all of the Sussex playing staff whilst wearing a blindfold, just by touching their ears. What a man

Sussex - AJ HODD+, MA THORNELY, RJ HAMILTON-BROWN, OP RAYNER, TMJ SMITH, SA PIOLET, MJG GOULD, LWP WELLS, RJ KIRTLEY*, WA ADKIN, JA THORPE, CJ LIDDLE

Hampshire - BAC HOWELL, MC KLEINVELDT, CC BENHAM*, SM ERVINE, KJ LATOUF, TG BURROWS+, H RIAZUDDIN, P MANN, DA GRIFFITHS, CP WOOD, CGW MORGAN, T PARSONS

Sussex making SEVEN changes from the team which clinched 2XI championship against Somerset in 2007. Aga and Liddle are playing for 1XI and Beer is 12th man, Brown is playing for England U19, Machan is ill and Beeny and Green have been dropped. There are 2XI debuts for Luke Wells son of former Sussex and England batsman Alan and James Thorpe, Adkin plays just his second game, Hamilton-Brown makes his Sussex 2XI debut and Kirtley and Hodd are dropped to 2XI.

Sussex had a torrid first day as Hampshire scoring in excess of 400 for the lost of four wickets with Benham and Ervine scoring hundreds and Latouf 90*.

Looks a pretty solid Hampshire batting lineup for that level there. Not heard of a few of those Hampshire players like Kleinveldt (assume he's South African), Mann, Wood and Parsons. No Dawson there so either he's injured or he's twelth man for the 1st team game...

What is the story about Harris? Will he play as an overseas player for Queensland?

If he has signed as an overseas player for Queensland then we have seen the last of him in a Sussex shirt.

It sounds like he may have well played his last game for Sussex!

Sussex contacted Queensland Cricket (QC) but were bluntly told he'd been signed by the Bulls as a local who was eligible to play for Australia.

"We were very clear on the agreement that we reached with Ryan," QC boss Graham Dixon said.

"He's not been contracted as an overseas player.

"We reached an agreement with his management based on the fact he continue to be eligible for Australian selection as do all of our contracted players."
------
I would have thought Sussex would be hoping he would be signed as an overseas player for Queensland because he could still play in this country. It looks like he is going to take his chances to try and get a baggy green some time in the future.

Closer to home, they could do worse than enquire about Mohammad Akram, who had one summer at Hove in 2004 without pulling up any trees and was released by Surrey after three seasons last year.
No, they really couldn't
