It's such a shame we're in Division 2 this season - with our batting arguably among the best in the counties (especially with strength in depth), a reliable bowling unit and the excellent leadership of Fleming we look a very good side.

This came up in the Essex thread in a discussion about how we should give them Patel if we're going to drop him in favour of overseas players etc...

If he had played more ahead of Smith / Alleyne last season (probably at 4 with Fleming at 3) we wouldn't have been relegated. Discuss.

Or alternatively, you might have still been relegated, but young Samit would be a better batsman for the experience - either way you (and possibly England) is the winner.

Maybe Will Jefferson to make a shock return to Essex on loan when (eventually) fit!

Possible. But my opinion of Jiggy a batsman (Will Smith? Jiggy? Geddit?) was and remains pretty low. And given how close we were to staying up (1 bonus point, as I recall) I could easily have seen Patel making that difference. We seem to be protecting an international captain from county standard new-ball attacks, which I think is odd.

Either way our squad looks heavy, with no way of giving everyone a game. And last time this happened it was the younger players that buggered off, which I hope doesn't repeat itself. That said, it's hard to argue with our start to the season...

Second division county cricket obviously doesn't suit these experienced Test batsmen. First Langer goes cuckoo, now Fleming

It's a real reversion to the times of 3 day games, sticky dogs and contrived 4th innings run chases.

I'm disappointed that Harris is back in for Footitt. It seems Notts are going for experience over youth every time, so the young players only get an opportunity if more experienced ones are injured or on international duty. Footitt's still a wee bit raw and wild, but he might have done well at Swansea. Maybe Harris will have a good match, but I'd rather see Footitt given a more extended run. Just like the situation with Patel, though he at least gets FPT games.

Yes, Glamorgan have done very well - congratulations to Croft and Harris (who it seems can bat a bit as well as bowl). Notts are missing Sidebottom, and it seems Footitt as well. A J Harris doesn't appear to have done anything yet to justify his recall after injury.

As long as you mean 5 wickets between them (and none for any other bowler) that's fine by me.

And Croft opens the bowling. Does this pitch take spin?

Harris bags Shafayat again.

The pitch might be a bunsen, but that doesn't justify not bowling your pacemen when they're threatening, like Harris most obviously was in the first innings (going by the scorecard).

What do people think of Shafayat? Will he fulfill his potential?
