Loughborough have gone past 500 against Northants. I can't remember a university getting a total like this against a county side in my lifetime. Cambridge and Oxford have both done it several times in the past, but they were all back in olden days.

Few wickets for Warwickshire's spinner on debut. Good stuff.

Meanwhile, Northants pile on a massive opening stand in reply to Luffbra's excellent total.

Akil Greenidge has proved the standout batsman for Cambridge against a strong Middlesex attack. I saw him bat briefly against Notts and he looked a very stylish player.

Loughborough have gone past their county opponents in the first innings of all their three matches.

In the rush to forge a new future for domestic cricket, the hidden, small-scale pleasures of the present are easily overlooked.

Ironically, the author, while eager to preserve these games, couldnt wait to get away, basing his article on a 10-minute visit. Almost as if he wants these games to exist but otherwise isnt interested.

And the idea that its good to have matches " more relaxed than the county championship" seems rather strange. Do the premier league halt for a round of friendlies for the relaxation?
Test cricket is in an increasingly desperate struggle for context and here is a call for games to not matter. Made by someone quickly leaving.

These matches are fine if needed as pre-season friendlies. But thats what they are. They are not part of the season. Counties should play counties for the county championship. Universities should play universities for the university championship

It's probably not grabbed anyone's attention on here, but the Varsity Match is taking place at Fenner's.

This match has great history, dating back to 1827, and I'm sure it would be enjoyable to watch the game.

However, I note that it has first-class status.

Now I have stuck up for the MCCU v county games being first class, but this? Ten players are making their first class debuts here, as most of the players did not even make the MCCU 1st XIs for the matches v the counties - as Cambridge MCCU and Oxford MCCU largely draw on players from Anglia Ruskin University and Oxford Brookes University, who are not eligible to play For Cambridge University and Oxford University. Given that Cambridge MCCU found it tough going this year, one wonders about some of the players lining up for Cambridge University here.

On one hand, there are bigger things to be concerned about, but on the other, this means that when the first class averages for 2017 are published, several of these players will figure prominently, possibly even topping the national averages on the strength of a good performance in this match.

Looks a cracking game so far from the scoreboard. As for the averages, isn't there normally a minimum no. of innings rule, so that such anomalies are edited out?

It does. From my first experience of Fenner's and its surroundings, which was in March, I could very happily while away three days and nights there.

Usually, yes, Playfair for example has "Also batted/bowled" for its county averages. Though the Cricket Paper just publishes the whole lot, two full pages, by average, so Basil Akram "topped" last year's averages with an average of 260 (160 + 100*).

Both Toby Roland-Jones (Leeds-Bradford) and Tom Westley (Durham) came through the MCCU system.

In the Glamorgan team playing Sussex, Owen Morgan, Jack Murphy, Andrew Salter and Tom Cullen all came through Cardiff MCCU.
