The only reason Strauss blocked this moved is he didn't want to set a precedent for himself in the future and to stop anymore requests of this nature. The workload bo**cks is just that.

Also what is message this sends out about CC. Play IPL and you are fine, fill ya boots. Sorry CC you are not 'jazzy' enough and as such you have to tow the line. Somebody on Twitter described this and other plans regarding the CC as a death by a thousand cuts.

Lancs won the toss and have elected to bat at the Oval. Interestingly lancs have opted for two spinners in Parry and Kerrigan to replace Jimmy who can't play.

Somerset are clearly looking to prepare the same sort of pitches this year. They've picked Leach and van der Merwe. In addition, Essex have left themselves with only two proper seamers, in favour of picking Harmer and Zaidi.

Also, the Oval must be looking dry this morning, as Dernbach has been replaced by Ansari. Surrey now have Batty, Ansari and Borthwick in the same team. Lancashire have picked Parry and Kerrigan.

I would say that this is good news, considering finding a spinner should be a priority. Strange that it is happening on April 14th though.

Crane does not get picked by Hants and people criticise Hants and say "how will we ever find a spin bowler if we don't pick one" whereas Somerset decide to prepare a pitch that will take some spin and people say it shouldn't happen in April. What fun.

Not directed at anyone here but some of the media.

25 years for tres as a first class cricketer was celebrated before play. What a legend.

I think that the problem was mainly with Middlesex fans (perhaps a few Yorkshire fans too). They complain that they either don't own their ground or they have to maintain a certain standard of square due to international commitments. Because of this, they find it very hard to force results during home games, when they've been the dominant side across the four days. I sort of get the argument but I don't mind teams like Somerset using it to their advantage. I will say though that I do like the best team to win the league, and I don't think justice would've been done had Somerset pinched the title from Middlesex.

Ben Coad has been the surprise package so far. Anyone got any idea of what he bowls like (pace, swing etc....)?

Prepare a turning pitch and bopara gets 2 wickets for 3 runs. Well played chaps. We always mess up the first two or three matches so never mind.

Think it will be Lancs and Warks going down.

Don't know why all the spinners. Surrey took 19 wickets with seam and 1 spin at the Oval last match.

Congratulations to Jordan Clark on his maiden first class 100. Hopefully Shiv and Clark can continue the rebuilding operation tomorrow.

How mainstream media disrespects championship cricket: the headline on the BBC report of Somerset v Essex tonight excitedly states: "Former England captain Alastair Cook hits unbeaten 39."

Wow. 39... is that the best 30-something since Hutton made 30 in England'sall-out total of 52?

Worse than that, it now says "Cook unbeaten as Essex dominate Somerset". Sounds like the man got an unbeaten 150, not a thirty odd after the bowlers did most of the work.

They're now within a couple of dozen runs of snatching Lloyd and Austin's 7th wicket record for Lancs (248 v Yorks, 1997).

Enjoyable morning listening to Sussex vs Kent on BBC radio, with Kent picking up regular wickets to leave the hosts scrambling towards the follow-on target. Seems the weather is holding up quite well around the country, considering it is only Easter weekend.

Great recovery from Lancs. From 67-5 to 419-9. Chanderpaul closing in on 150. Borthwick hasn't had a bowl.

Chanderpaul is just excellent. Essex collapse like a cheap deck chair and I don't see us batting two days for a draw. Somerset's to lose now unless the Harmer and Zaidi can back up Porter's early incisions.

Looks like he has a really nice shape on the ball but not very quick. Judging from the ECB highlights I wouldn't put him as anything above medium pace, but I'm happy to defer to those who've actually seen him in the flesh.

The problem with this is the new toss rule was brought in to stop teams preparing green tops. So if that they want to produce seaming wickets then they have to be prepared to bat first on it. So if Somerset want to prepare deteriating already used wickets then the away team should get the option to bat first on it.

So never going to play for England then.

How about Jofra Archer? Is he English qualified?
