Surrey were 66-2 but everyone there knew the result was a draw from well before that. Surrey could not collapse a second time 211/2 to 262/8 again shot selection contributed not the pitch. Lancs even started day 4 with Kyle Jarvis bowling to one slip. No chance went begging through that vacant area.
The interesting thing for me with this match is that both sides clearly expected the pitch to take spin from their team selections. Five wickets fell in the first session (all to seamers) then only another eighteen in the next eleven sessions!

The match against Warks the previous week featured very little spin bowling, with even Surrey's regular bogeyman Jeetan Patel making little impression, and was over and done within an hour of the final day. I walked out to the middle to look at the pitch on both occasions and they looked pretty much identical - in fact the pitches at the Oval always look more or less the same these days, and change little by the final day.

Any batsman who gets his eye in can usually trust his judgement safe in the knowledge that he's unlikely to get two similar balls behaving differently due to the pitch. If Borthwick had held a low catch at second slip to remove Chanderpaul in the 30's, with six Lancs wickets already down and the total still short of 200, things may have panned out a bit differently.

Surrey made a straight choice leaving out Dernbach for Ansari. Lancs had the option to play Mahmood (for his second first class game) rather than Kerrigan but it's possible that they just wished to play their most experienced bowlers (Bailey might not have been fully fit and wasn't named in the original 12). Of the spinners playing were they the most likely to exploit the pitch? Batty, Ansari, Borthwick, Parry, Kerrigan, Livingstone.

You are quite right about the Oval pitch - there was little change. Wickets were primarily down to shot selection.

Things may have panned out differently, I think it certainly would have been different. For instance there would have been no need for Surrey's post lunchtime third day mysterious surrender. Their attitude would surely have been completely different.

Cracking set of players and fixtures these next few days. That man Coad strikes again, removing Carberry early.

Going to be fun batting against Jimmy.

Luck of the fixtures really is a thing isn't it. Last week we played cook and this week Jimmy.

Look at the Yorkshire side this week compared to other weeks of the season.

Notts have broad playing today. It he didn't last week.

Come on Somerset.

Somerset will probably be 138/0 by the end of the day.

All the away teams opted to bowl but only at Lancashire have wickets tumbled. wonder if this bowling first has become a fad amongst visiting captains, they do it when the shouldn't.

Liam Cromar @LiamCromar
Nine uncontested tosses have yielded 873 runs and 23 wickets @ 37.96ónot as low an average as might've been anticipated

He injured his thigh (hamstring?) when batting at the Oval when about 120 (iirc). Needed a runner and did not field in the entire match.

I interpreted the complete silence from the club during the week, as meaning that he had probably not been passed fit. His inclusion in the squad was probably either wishful thinking or a smokescreen.

It would have been so simple for the club's communications staff, when providing team news yesterday on the club website, which included the (not news) that Anderson was available for this match after a one match rest, and the news that Croft was still injured, to add a sentence that Chanderpaul had / had not recovered from his injury sustained at the Oval or would undergo a late fitness test. However they seem to think they work for GCHQ. In this case it was clearly a case that no news was bad news.

Not all teams have future England star Craig overton though. He will be a brilliant cricketer. I find it odd how some on here write him off.

I love the BBC wicket alerts but I am enjoying them since 2.30 far less than before that.

Abel's having a Hameed.

I was thinking much the same today when Essex became the latest in a long line of sides I've seen insert the oppo on a greenish Lord's strip and then chase leather all day.

In truth, Essex's was a loose bowling performance, offering too many scoring opportunities and scant wicket-taking potential. Young Beard seemed to struggle with the slope, as many a greenhorn has done, while Wagner still seems to believe that bouncing the ball well clear of the batsman's shoulder is a fruitful tactic (did Tymal Mills leave his 'Thoughts on Left Arm Pace Bowling' dossier in the Essex dressing room?). With Harmer unable to tie up an end, Ravi and Ten proved ineffective back up.

It was also the case that the Middx openers, especially Robson, were in fearfully fine nick. They pierced the field with uncanny regularity and it wasn't only the short Grandstand boundary that was peppered. As tea approached, I began to anticipate witnessing a 300 run opening stand but, having reached his century, Gubbins seemed to switch off and tickled behind. Bad light curtailed play at 4:35 and the Essex players seemed happy for the first time all day.

Even in the gloom, Lord's looked a picture. The new Warner Stand is nearing completion, while the bucket seats in the Compton and Edrich Stands have been replaced by those of the modern padded variety. And not before time, I might add.

Porter's bowling looked pretty decent from what I heard and figures. He's certainly having to step up pretty quickly.
