Is there any reason why the Hampshire vs Yorkshire and Warwickshire vs Surrey fixtures have been played again so quickly?

Some stoic resistance from Jack Leach with the bat alongside Elgar. Seems to be an improved bat this season, with a half-ton in the MCCU game and currently has about 60 runs this season without being dismissed in the CC. Must be on his way back to the selectors' thoughts...

UPDATE: reached his maiden FC half century before being removed for 52.

Talking of the batting of bowlers, Reece Topley has come in at number 10. Surely Brad Wheal isn't that bad a batsman?

He was as bad a batsman as I ever saw at Essex. He did actually bat at 9 in the only game he played before for Hampshire last year.

Not often the last two wickets double the score. I assume the pitch is flat flat flat.

Believe that was his top score, too.

Now been usurped as he's currently made an unbeaten 16 against Yorkshire. He must have done some serious work because whenever I've seen him he's every bit as bad as his record suggests.

I'm more surprised he's lasted 50 balls.

yesterday seemed to be blamed on overhead conditions.

Anderson's county championship figures after three innings:

68-16-165-4 av 41.25 BB 3-56 SR 17ov or 102 balls

Hameed just gets his first run in 3 innings as I type.

Long way to go to the test matches but Jennings must currently be way ahead to partner Cook.
Of course Root may choose to revert back to batting at 4, but that does squeeze the middle order.

I think Root was almost certainly nailed on to bat at 4 with Jennings at three, and if they picked the side tomorrow probably would be stuck with. If this carries on - and it's hard not to see Jennings enjoying Division 2 bowling - then Scott Borthwick's early season runs might see him called back up at 3, or perhaps Northeast's runs will get him in to the middle order.

Gubbins can't be too far away.

Would the fact Root's batting at 3 for Yorkshire despite there being multiple other candidates who could slot in there not suggest he intends to keep that position for England?

Based on what Gale said, it wasn't really Root's decision. Much as I'd think the England selectors will pick a squad rather than Root saying he's desperate to play at three. Plus it's certainly at odds with what Bayliss has said about Root's desire to play at three being lukewarm at best.

Just seems a bit odd to me given Handscomb has been at number 3 so far this season and will probably bat there for the rest of the season once Root goes. Unless Ballance didn't want to move from 4 to 5.

Oh. Looks like we are going to have another shot at losing after big first innings lead. Oops.

Yes you might well be right, but who knows. Ballance certainly seems to have settled at 4 so far this season - runs against Hampshire while the rest of the batting collapses, not for the first time that exact scenario has played out this season!

Stoneman might be in the reckoning too, with more runs that Borthwick this season opening against the same attacks.

I don't think Hameed will have to do much to be in the side. His performances against India will count for more than his early season failings. Who was the last England player to be dropped for poor domestic performances?
