Good interview with Ian Dews on the website currently, clarifying his role and he makes mention of some of his charges - he says, f'rinstance Adil Rashid is going to have to have a level head this year - I found myself nodding whilst reading (again).

Surprised this hasn't already been mentioned but apparantly former coach David Byas has been appointed as an umpiring coach for this season.

What experience does he have for this?

Expect half the umpires to leave for sunnier climes within 2 months.

It'll be alright, they'll all have big hands, hands like shovels.

This was the scorecard in a 'Darren Gough's XI' v 'Anthony McGrath XI' game yesterday. Good performances by the second XI players and all three wicketkeepers....but little to no time at the crease for the front-line batsmen. M Wood still can't score any runs

Bowling figures don't look great.

Interesting article with Darren Gough in today's Guardian.

http://sport.guardian.co.uk/cricket/...053219,00.html

This I never knew:

"I've been amazed," he says as he taps the flower on his shirt, "that the young players here know all about my dancing career but they didn't know how many petals there are in the Yorkshire rose. It's the first thing Phil Carrick taught me. There are 11 with a red one in the middle for the captain and I'm chuffed that's me.

I'm surpised youdidn't know about that. The Yorkshire CC 'Rose' was designed by Lord Hawke for that very reason.......... that's why some people think it looks like a daisy.

I probably should know about it, but I'm not the most observant on aesthetics, I couldn't even tell you what was on my school tie. Now when it's about all things historical, that's a different matter.......

They've announced the squad for Surrey, and the Second XI for Durham seconds...

Surrey v. YCCC, 18th - 21st April, at the Brit Oval:

C White 13
J J Sayers 22
A McGrath 10
M Y Khan 75
J A Rudolph 24
G L Brophy (w/k) 20
A U Rashid 3
T T Bresnan 16
D Gough (Capt.) 8
J N Gillespie 44
M J Hoggard 14
D J Kruis 5

YCCC (2nd XI) v. Durham (2nd XI), 17th - 19th April, at Headingley Carnegie:

M Wood
Gale (Capt.)
Lyth
Pyrah
Gilbert
G Wood (w/k)
Wainwright
Lawson
Shahzad
Norton
Thornicroft
Lee

Shocks are: MJ Wood not getting a game, and I thought despite a season in the doldrums last dig out he'd be a shoo-in and Guy not selected at all - wasn't he injured, but then he participated in the Dazzler vs. McGrath XI's? The seconds batting looks a tad light?

I'm also still of the opinion that Rashid won't do as much this season as we all would like, and Lawson will come up on the outside.

Rashid picked ahead of Lawson, it's not really a surprise given the MCC match. I'd personally pick Bresnan for 12th man.

Will Younis be ready to play a match?

You thought Sayers/White would have been dropped for Wood? Why? The guy barely scored a run last season, and has continued his form in the friendlies. I'd have had Gale in there ahead of him, if there was a space.

Dunno about Guy, he participated in both that Dazzler/McGrath game and the Derby slaughter match. Perhaps they (rightfully) think G Wood would gain more with the experience.

Also, agree about the Seconds batting. Although Wainwright, Lawson and Shahzad all have pretensions with the bat, another specialist bat couldn't go amiss. They should really pluck up the courage to get rid of Pyrah. Not good enough with the bat and dire with the ball.

The entire squad is looking ready for a cull, with even more quality youngsters looking for places, such as Allinson, Bairstow and Hannon-Dalby. Players like Pyrah, Thornicroft, Guy etc. just seem to be taking up space in the seconds. I know there's always a few of those sorts of back-up players around, but we have too many.

I personally wouldn't have had Wood in, I just expected us to play him 'cos he looked untouchable last time out - either in place of Sayers or in place of one of the bowlers, perhaps Bresnan. Looks like Gough is willing to confound expectation so I'm also glad about WK Wood getting the game. Agree on the cull. Perhaps we need to build a huge wicker man on Woodhouse Moor and tell the 'seconds... You can start running... Anyone who can get to a KFC is safe, and then chase them in souped-up Land Rover Defenders until we've sorted out the boys from the liggers.

Well 390/8 wasn't a bad start to the season, with a ton for Rudolph and a mighty 86 from Rashid. More of the same tomorrow!

Greg Wood suffered a pretty serious injury yesterday, from a Claydon bouncer.

http://www.yorkshireccc.com/news/yordurham1

Apparently it's much more serious than that report makes out, and emergency plastic surgery at the hospital was required. Hope he recovers OK

Well let's hope that both these guys continue to exceed our expectations!

Well, I did think Bresnan's batting may see him as more of an all-rounder than GBats. So at least I'm on target with one of my predictions. Adil Rashid is confounding me, however.

EDIT: And let's pray Gillespie's batting continues in it's current vein. I've only just managed to check the score this minute, and tonight's cricketing news has brought me out in smiles.

Surely he should be coming in ahead of Gough - his Test batting average is better than Gough's 1st class average!! But on the serious side, when Hoggard is out of the team you'll be wanting Dizzy to be taking wickets more than making runs.

Must be a few South Australians holding various batting records for Yorkshire now??

You try telling that to Dazzler. He'd be coming in at three if he had his way.
