Next week will be interesting we will be at full strength with only Flintoff away on test duty. I am so pleased that England seem to be leaning from previous mistakes with seam bowlers and have put Anderson on Standby but he can play for Lancs.

Obviously not such good news if you name is Hogg, Newby or Smith.

Anderson likes playing Worcs he got his first 10fer against them in 2004. I'd be very glad if he repeated this feat this year.

If I were Jon, I'd say that Daz is your dad and that I claim my five pound prize. As it is, I'll just point out that Mahmood's recent county record is a good one and that demoting him now would be a stupidly retrograde step. Give the guy some county cricket. He'll go for runs but he'll take plenty of county wickets. If he can learn to try to do a little less without losing all his variation (leg stump half volleys, full tosses, long hops) then he'll be a really good bowler.

I don't share my Dad's view (who is definitely not Daz). I think that Lancs need to invest some time and effort into Mahmood and get him performing well for Lancs. Yes it isn't great news for Hogg, Newby and Smith but certainly Hogg and Smith got a big chance last year with Mahmood playing for England and Anderson injured.

What Wakinson might have to start to think about is do Cork and Chapple have a right to be automatic picks or should they make way at times for younger players. It may be that they consider loaning some players out to get first class experience until the ODI start when they will certainly be without Anderson.

It's rather an interesting problem, isn't it? I suspect this season is the time to be starting to ease Cork and/or Chapple out. Mahmood has to play a full season for Lancs. That will not harm Lancs at all and will give him a better chance of developing enough to get back into the England side.

Assuming Lancs will go for 5 bowlers including a spinner based on the first class averages this season the those bowlers would be:

Newby 19.28
Keedy 22.21
Mahmood 23.00
Smith 24.33
Anderson 27.66

Chapple has an average of 29.55 and Cork 53.75. On the basis of age I suspect that Cork will be the player who will be playing less and less.

Do you have the career stats available for comparison? Only there hasn't been that much cricket yet this season to judge by. Having said that, I do think that current form is important when comparing young players who have probably improved in recent years with older players who have probably declined. I think we're in agreement that at least one of Chapple and Cork should be missing for most games this season unless and until there are injuries or call ups.

First Class averages (including test matches):

Anderson 58 matches 199 @ 28.92 SR 48.69
Chapple 207 matches 613 @ 28.69 SR 56.90
Cork 267 matches 849 @ 26.47 SR 53.61
Hogg 35 matches 60 @ 41.35 SR 77.63
Keedy 150 matches 471 @ 31.02 SR 66.07
Mahmood 45 matches 123 @ 31.45 SR 49.79
Newby 14 matches 41 @ 29.39 SR 48.95
Smith 40 @ 30.77 SR 66.90

Based on Averages the best 4 seamers are Cork, Chapple, Anderson and Newby.

Based on Strike Rate the best 4 seaers are Anderson, Newby, Mahmood and Cork.

I guess looking at last seasons stat's would be more useful to see if Cork and Chapple are in decline.

The Lancs second XI is going to look well populated with quality bowlers, especially when Keedy is demoted for Murali.

Just found 2005 and 2006 Championship averages.

Just looking at them Mahmood has made good progress in 2006 compared to 2005 although he played fewer games his average and strike rate were much better. Cork and Chapple are good for 40 wickets a piece at 25-26.

Or there may be a use of the loans system. Oliver Newby has played for Notts in the past. Surrey and Sussex could probably do we some quality seamers!

We've got too many bowlers and all-rounders and not enough class batsmen.

I'd forgotten that. For home games, turning tracks will be prepared and then both spinners might play though. In that case, another seamer will drop out though.

I did think it odd that Lancs selected sides with about 6 front line bowlers and some part time options in two consecutive one day games. You just have to decide which ones to play, not play them all.

Just looking at Anderson's stats for previous seasons. I hadn't quite realised how well he did in 2002. 50 wickets at 22.28 compare that with 2005 when he took 60 at 30.21. Compare his with Mahmood's which explains why Mahmood is just so unpredictable.

It's those foreign tours that have really shown the lads up isn't it? Look at those figures for the Ashes and in Anderson's case, South Africa.
