Coaching staff

Barnett Director of Cricket apparently wrote his own job description during a 'review' of the structure at DCCC. Part of the restructuring is to cut the 'elite' coaching roles and reduce the cost and release money for players. How has the coach budget been cut? We had Welch, Sadler, Botha, (left 2016)Guy, (left for Denstone Oct/Nov 2015) Patel, (part time) AJ Harris (Academy/bowling). I think that's it. Sadler, Patel? and AJ still there. We are now going to have Barnett (Director of cricket - Higher profile/bigger salary than Coach?) 1st Xl support coach (Sadler?) and a Specialist T20 Coach. Will Harris retain his role in Academy or don't we need that one any more? Which of the players are the specialist back up coaches and were they used this season?
Is this really going to save money for player investment and put Derbyshire back on the road to success?
I have serious doubts.

Reece signing

Could be an excellent signing for Derbyshire if he gets the right support.

Wright and Tahir

Excellent moves by DCC to get these two. Slight concern about their ages but both should bring some much needed experience and wisdom to the coaching and playing teams. Looking forward to some spin friendly wickets next season.

John Sadler has left. Does that mean Barnett is the coach?

After his exit at Derbyshire John Sadler has been quickly snapped up by Leicestershire as their 2nd XI coach, being chosen from a "number of high quality applications from all over the globe".

After months of speculation that they might do so, Derbyshire have signed all-rounder Daryn Smit, who scored a double ton for the 2s when tried out last year.

Whatever one thinks about the pros and cons of signing such players, Derbyshire's acquisitions look to have put them in better shape than last year.

cricinfo this morning is referring to Derbyshire as "the Peakites". Is this new coinage? I confess I'd never heard it before...

I thought they peaked when they won the Championship in 1936 and it has been downhill all the way since? I'll take my sweater...

Great to see Luis Reece hit a hundred after three seasons when everything went wrong.

He and Godleman could form a wall at the top of Derbyshire's order this season.

couldn't agree with you more. But:

Shame it was in a losing cause and shame the bowling was looking for a declaration. 38 runs off Newton, 29 of Wakley, 14 off Rossington helped.

By all accounts he played soundly in both innings so fingers crossed it might not be the first of a few this season.

Solid enough yet unspectacular start by Derbyshire, which given the tools at their disposal is probably the best you could expect. We finally seem to be getting to terms that 300 is becoming the par score in limited overs cricket, although there seemed to little realisation that on that pitch against Notts 300 was never liable to be enough.

Wilson looks an excellent signing and brings much needed impetus to the middle order, however it's a shame his arrival is clearly hampering the development of Harvey Hosein. There's a strong argument for Wilson to play as a batsmen and to drop the underwhelming Daryn Smit, although you wonder if the terms of Wilson's signature include him taking the gloves. I'd also question the wisdom of bringing an overseas spinner at this stage of the season and a particularly unspectacular one at that.

Concerning at this stage we are yet to see Viljoen. Will Davies has made a promising start to the season but without a spearhead its difficult to see where a 4 day win will come from.

Harvey Hosein, who averaged 105 in the Championship in four matches last season, with a ton and four 50s, has yet to be selected for the 1st team this season.

What on earth are they doing?

Absolutely baffling stuff. To pick Wilson ahead of him i can sort of understand - although he could play as a batsmen alone amidst this rabble - but when Smit was keeping over Hosein in the 50 over stuff that was beyond a joke. That's the cusp of the baffling decision making but Ben Slater being overlooked for the bulk of the championship games is another, as is whoever opted for a spinner who struggles to make whst is a pretty average Sri Lanka side as an overseas player.

It's very difficult to muster even a shred of enthusiasm for Derbyshire right now.

According to the commentary, Derbyshire look demoralised on the field.

Leicestershire's record total of 701 looks well within their sights.

Pretty bad form by Derbyshire in moving the fixture against Kent to Chesterfield - a ground that has recent drainage problems, with the whole match against Northants abandoned last year - in July.

This was apparently to allow for a Boyzone concert at Derby on September 16, with the effect that would have on the outfield there.

All for clubs making additional revenue, but the cricket must always come first.

As it is, they have had a very lucky escape, with Kent out of the running for promotion, so it's essentially been kept out of the news. Had things been different, there would have been a s**tstorm around this.

But it's pretty sad for both local fans and esp. those Kent supporters who booked hotels etc. in Derbyshire some time ago.
