Just saw this residing low down (on page 3) and thought I would BUMP it up, bizarre seeing how few posts there are on this, compared to the amount of posts on the kent thread on the Tavs' forum

We're trying to let Kent fly beneath the radar.

They have quietly pulled themselves to second place in the CC and reached the finals of 20/20 and the final of FP. I'm sort of pinching myself right now, because I don't quite know how they have managed to pull this off!

It's all down to Geraint Jones. The man's a born winner.

You may be onto something there. Notts and Kent at the top of the CC, with their two born winners Read and Jones, featuring prominently.

This is more of a Kolpak/foreigner debate but one of the main reasons for our success this year are the amount of non-English guys in our team. The current game against Hants for example has:

Key (Kent)
Denly (Kent)
Dexter (SA)
Van Jaarsveld (SA)
Tredwell (Kent)
Kemp (SA)
Jones (PNG/Aus/Wales)
Mahmood (Pak)
Arafat (Pak)
McLaren (Pak)
Joseph (WI)

Althugh we've had recent 20/20 success, and are still the only club ever present in Div 1 of the CC, we've always been a county eager to play local lads and it's a shame that on virtually every occasion this season over half the side have been imports of one type or another.

McLaren (SA) not (PAK), but you are right nonetheless. I think Robbie Joseph is England qualified, though I'm not sure.

I'd like to see Sam Northeast given a run.

Whoops, yeah McLaren is a Saffer! Joseph's been around for years but I believe it's on a student visa - a bit of a ruse to allow him to be still considered as a non-overseas player. Apparently he's not that popular and has a shocking attitude but we've invested so much cash into him that we're reluctant to let him go now.

I'd love for Sam Northeast to be given a go but he's not scored to many runs for Sandwich in the Kent Premier Division this year. He has just hit a big ton against a Sussex 2nd XI containing James Kirtley so a chance may be forthcoming sometime soon, especially if we slip into our usual mid table position by the end of the year.

Also does anyone know why Matty Walker's not playing?

I hear what you are saying about Joseph. My sister ran into him at the University (Canterbury) and she said he thinks he really is quite something, 'arrogant t****r' was the phrase she used if memory serves.

I think Matty Walker is nearing his pension, I'd rather him than Dexter in the current side though.

Its good to see Amjad getting back to where he was a couple of years ago, not a bad pace attack we have now with him, Joseph, Arafat and Mclaren

How do Kent people rate McLaren? I see some overtures are being made by SA to win him back but it looks like he can earn more money playing with Kent than for his country and he may extend his contract in the next few days to stay with Kent and try to qualify for England. According to the SA coach Arthur, he would be very difficult for CSA to match what Kent is offering.

Ryan Mclaren has pulled out of the SA one day squad as Kent have refused to release him from his contract. This could get messy.........

Looks like both parties have accepted this decision but I doubt the SA selectors would ever pick him again after this letdown. I guess money in the end governed his decision.
SA players don't seem to have the same levels of patriotism that other countries' players have.

It was Kent's decision, wasnt it? Re patriotism, other countries players dont have to take 50% pay cuts to play for their countries. Try that and see how "patriotic" people are - patriotic Sri Lankans who want to play in the IPL rather than tour England for example in 2009 for example.

We've had the moronic (or imbecilic) patriotism discussion though we never worked out how patriotic Aussies keep coaching opposition teams against their home country Did anybody see how the patriotic Symmonds did for his country in the test today?

CSA seem to have accepted the decision and Mclaren will obviously see out his contract but I'm not sure this is the end of it. We've seen it in other sports and we've seen it with VvJ, if a player really wants to throw his toys, the county might not have a choice. And with pressure on the county's to play less Kolpaks increasing, Kent may come in for some stick for preventing a young player turning out for his country.
