Looks as if Mike Powell is poised to sign for Kent; several websites mention this.

Kent have increased life memberships fom 3000 to 10,000 quid till the next AGM to stop people buying them until they decide whether to keep the category at that AGM.

Lovely.

Lovely.
It might be a case of being cruel to be kind. Not much point in shelling out heaps for life membership if, in five years, there's no longer a club at which to be a member.

Sounds a bit odd. Anyone who can afford to stump up three grand right now is unlikely to be overly worried about saving money in the long run. It's not as if life membership is a "too good to be true" bargain that droves of people will be rushing to snap up just so they never have to pay the county any money in the future.

I am not a Kent fan and only know what I have just read in that link to the Kent Reform Group but petty actions by Management of any Club is not the way to solve anything.

I may be showing my ignorance of things which may have already happened at Kent but surely if the constitution contains something which the County Management consider detrimental to the continued running of the Club their first action should be to clearly put that to the Membership and try to convince them to agree to an amendment to the constitution.

The way they seem to have tried to impose this on the Membership was always going to antagonise the very people on whom the County depend.

Aye, there's a growing feeling amongst Kent members that we're viewed as something of an incumberance, ie "this organisation would run so much better if it wasn't for the people paying for it". A club might be able to get away with such an attitude when there are 8000 members on the rolls, and the team is challenging for trophies on an annual basis but in a time of both economic and cricketing recession, it has to be extremely careful about alienating its fragile support.

It won't deter me because my loyalty to the club and its history far outstrips any antipathy I might feel towards whoever is in current control of the reins. But I know personally of others whose support is less unconditional and who may not be maintaining their affiiliation for too much longer.

"London Borough of Bromley Development Control Committee met yesterday evening to consider the outline planning application submitted by Kent County Cricket Club that would see the redevelopment of the ground at Beckenham. The application included plans for a new all-weather hockey pitch; an indoor multi-use training centre; a health and fitness centre; improved permanent spectator seating and a small conference facility. The funding for these facilities will be raised through enabling development. The Development Control Committee voted to defer a decision on the submitted outline planning application and the Club await a timetable for the deferral".

Good news but this must surely indicate that there's no realistic chance of a return to Mote Park?

Kent have announced the acquisition of Ben Harmison. I think I'm reasonably happy about that.

We now have three Championship winners in the squad. Must be the first time since about 1986.

He's not played regular first team cricket for a while and has a bit of a history of underachieving. But, then, so had Dazza Stevens before he signed for Kent.

At least he'll be out big brother's shadow. You just have to hope he doesn't suffer his brother's home sickness!

Getting out of the shadow of Durham's entire seam attack might be useful in his development. In his (admittedly brief) f-c bowling career, he has an impressive strike rate of 47, superior to everyone in Kent's current attack and earned entirely in the top division...which suggests there may be something there. His batting has disappointed thus far but it wouldn't take a steepling improvement to put him at least on the level of the current contenders for batting berths at Canterbury.

The brothers Harmy's surprise that Ben was released after a first team season where he bowled one over for 15 runs and had a highest score of 3 not out suggests that the real reason they are often homesick is that they are from another planet.
