I think those of us who were concerened by the visible decline in Dougies performances have been sadly vindicated over the last 8 months. We may have taken a lot of flack MPT, but I do belive we were honestly appraising the situation for the club, Dougie and the supporters. Lets hope the guy has one or two great performances left..... but we can not allow too many 60 mph performances in his last year.

As for Bob W. This story gets worse and worse and probably has a long way to run...... but I don't want to speculate.

However the BBC reports...

"Former South Africa star Allan Donald says the World Cup should be called off in the wake of the news that Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer was murdered. "

I disagree - do that and just think of what could happen in the future...... a free invitation to any crank to stop a major sporting event.

No, I don't see the point of stopping the tournament. If nothing else, I would imagine Bob Woolmer, being the cricket obsessive that he was, would not have wanted it too.

Anyway...

Well, contrary to what the 'loyalists' may think, I don't seek any pleasure in Dougie Brown's impending decline. The problem is, like you say Warley, you would have to be (quite literally) blind or be Nick "best mate" Knight to not see that his performances are rapidly waning.

Let's just hope Steyn stays fit, because regardless of our so-called strengthening in the batting department, our seam-attack looks increasingly lightweight cannon fodder.

Waning - yes, obviosly. Still worthy of the allrounders place? That is the question. But we've done that a few times.

Do we really feel - as our coach and CE - say that we have strengthened the team? I dont - unless an enormous amount goes right.

However a school boy error

Because its a long way from section 19 to the middle for them to see the decline.

...... by the way section 19 seem to have declined in numbers over the last two seasons

Kim - I agree in many ways. But I think we have strengthened the squad to launch our bid for the T20 and Pro 40 cups. We do have a big squad - lets hope we don't go down the crop rotational system again that disrupts the team. 80% of the team should be core for all competitions.... and a winning team is a winning team. As for Dougie - he may have his moments, but my worry is that he has perhaps a few too many 8-0-60-0's to look forward to.

Im not sure. Its easy to forget how bad we were in one days last year - out first round 20:20, appalling in the C&G and relegated in the pro 40 if it hadnt rained and brought in the D/L in the last game. We've lost our two best bats in the pro40 (Ali and Knight) and Im not sure Maddy plus Sangakarra/whoever makes us much, if any, stronger. Streal and Carter are a year older as well. Steyn's avarge at Essex of 60 per CC wicket isnt that heartening.

Maybe if we do settle to a team we'll be better - but I think a strategy that doesnt appear to be made up anew for each game would help more.

Bottomline for me is that there are question marks against a hell of a lot of players and a huge amount will have to go right for us to be OK. As mentioned before, its time some reputations matched achivement.

It's not even a question in my opinion. To be classed as an all-rounder (in the truest sense) you have to be worthy of selection for either batting or bowling.

Sadly the term, as we've found with the England team also, now refers to nothing more then a "bits 'n' pieces" player; someone who bowls a bit, bats a bit and OK in the field.

Dougie Brown, for my money, has now fallen firmly into the later category.

Sad but true. He perhaps should have retired with Nick ! He'll probably take all 20 Lancs wickets now and score a quick 100 off 41 balls

Well we shall see.**

But if he cant get in for his batting this doesnt say much for the specialist bats who are likely to play - who achieved very little more than Dougie last year. And who are my main worry for 2007.

**actually we wont as I dont believe Batch will play him anyway.

I agree** Kim - but if the batting and bowling doesn't stand up without Dougie we are in trouble - real trouble

No more Lemming like performances from our batting - this is the last chance saloon for some .......

Agree. Its just that I dont see any logical reason why 2006's lemming should be 2007's limpet....

But 2004's heroes became 2006's lemmings

I know there was no Bell or Hogg - but the collapse was spectacular

After we won in 2004 due to batting, they said we needed to sort out the bowling.

So how come in 2007 we've still got most of the bowling (Streak, Tahir, Brown, Carter) but most of the batting (Knight, Wagh, Bell, Hogg, Powell) has effectively gone?

A fasinating question .......

Last year we had little or no umph. This year we need atleast a couple of guys to show some phizzz, show some pride, show some form and win some games. No more of this slouching round the outfield, fretting about cars not having satnav and getting people to spin stories in the Birmingham Post. Coemth the hour cometh the man...... and Streak needs to get rid of the looseing mentality of when he captained Zimbabwee - he needs to become a winner and not just a man of ability. Our coach has said he measures his success this season on being a top 2 county - I hope to praise his success ! or sadly salute his departure !

I think our signings have been pretty much spot on. We were hit with the injury of Love but replaced him with sangakkara who i believe will be a huge hit and hopefully oram'll be able to produce some huge hits in the twenty20. Last year was a disappointment but i've got real confidence for this year. Come on you bears!

Jack,

As always you are the over-optimistic to my pessimistic

The problem is, not with "whom" so much; (although Oram, in my opinion is nothing more then a slog merchant cynically brought in for the twenty20. Oh, not forgetting he's due an operation which could keep him out anyway!!!), but the period of time we have these players for. Sangakkara and Steyn are only with us for, at best, a few months then we could be back to more or less were we were last year!

Plus, padding out the batting line-up doesnít cover-up our shortcomings in the seam-bowling department.

Morning all

So Darren. Last year you chipped in with a batting average of 27.12 for the county campaign. Putting it mildly, this strays onto the wrong side of rubbish. I mean, even Ian Westwood bettered this. Not good.

Care to expand, elaborate, make up some excuse?
