I reckon if Atherton had played a few years later he would have had an average similar to Cook now and vice versa as I think Cook would have had serious issues with a number of the quicks of the 90s. His record for the era he played in wasn't too bad.

http://www.supersport.com/cricket/sa...anywhere_Steyn
Ironically, Steyn believes that the groin and shoulder injuries which have ruined his season were caused by not playing enough cricket rather than too much. “Managing my workload doesn’t always mean resting,” he said ruefully. “I need to make sure I have enough overs in my legs and body before I start a test match at 100 miles an hour Last edited by 1000yardstare : 29th March 2016 at 12:22. |

Usually in ODIs a good bowler takes 1.5 wickets a match.
25+ ODIs 2.04 Henry (25) 1.95 Starc (46) 1.85 Shami (47) 1.84 Boult (32) 1.74 McClenaghan (47) 1.70 Morkel (105) 1.64 McKay (59) 1.56 Steyn (112) 1.56 Tsotsobe (60) 1.53 Taylor (81) 1.52 Malinga (191) Our bowlers 1.58 Willey (12) 1.57 Topley (7) 1.50 Finn (65) 1.50 Jordan (26) 1.34 Woakes (41) Can't believe how good Matt Henry is and he is not going to the 20/20 World Cup. Then there is Rahman from Bangladesh who has only played 9 matches 26 wickets 2.88 wickets per game against India, SA and Zim. That's likely to change as he plays for longer. Brett Lee 1.71, Akram 1.41, McGrath 1.52, Gough 1.47, Donald 1.65. Of those who have taken 150+ wickets only two bowlers have a s/r of under 30. Lee and Morkel. You would have to say that New Zealand have the best bowling attack with Henry, Boult, McClenaghan all taking their wickets at over 1.70. Next best would be Australia Starc 1.95, Hazelwood 1.58 (17) Cummins 1.83 (18). |

My gut feeling is that the better bowlers take more wickets per match now than they did 15-20 years ago. Not sure if this is true, do more wickets fall per game now than in the past?

Maybe these days bowlers have so many variations but I can't believe that bowlers in the past didn't have them as well. Also could be that batsmen are more attacking. We now have totals of 350s and 400s.

I seem to remember 6 of Broad's were conceded in a single over.
I assume the figures in bold are the number of matches played. Perhaps overs bowled would have provided better context. |

Bowling at the death in 20/20s (last 4 overs) since the start of the format in 2005 Updated till 28.3.16 53.0-0-533-21 - Dernbach (10.05) 45.4-0-416-20 - Broad (9.11) 27.4-0-209-15 - Jordan (7.55) 26.3-0-289-11 - Bresnan (10.90) 24.4-0-198-12 - Sidebottom (8.02) 16.2-1-137-5 - Anderson (8.38) 14.0-0-113-5 - Finn (8.07) 12.4-1-101-6 - Bopara (7.97) 10.2-0-121-4 - Willey (11.71) 10.0-0-74-4 - Swann (7.40) 10-0-72-3 - Flintoff (7.20) 9.4-0-77-6 - Stokes (7.97) 6.0-0-59-1 - Wright (9.83) 5.2-0-58-5 - Woakes (10.88) 5.0-0-34-2 - Plunkett (6.80) 5.0-0-49-2 - Collingwood (9.80) 4.1-0-39-3 - Topley (9.37) 4.0-0-33-2 - Gurney (8.25) 4.0-0-25-3 - Mahmood (6.25) 4.0-0-29-0 - Yardy (7.25) 4.0-0-55-2 - Shahzad (14.66) 2.5-0-48-0 - Schofield (16.96) 2.0-0-12-1 - Rashid (6.00) 2.0-0-15-2 - Khan (7.50) 2.0-0-30-0 - Meaker (15.00) 1.5-0-24-0 - Tredwell (13.11) 1.0-0-6-2 - Maddy (6.00) 1.0-0-3-2 - Wood (3.00) 1.0-0-10-0 - Pietersen (10.00) 1.0-0-11-1 - Tremlett (11.00) 1.0-0-13-0 - Lewis (13.00) 1.0-0-14-0 - Patel (14.00) 1.0-0-23-0 - Briggs (23.00) 1.0-0-11-1 - Ali (11.00) 1.0-0-5-0 - Mills (5.0) 0.5-0-10-0 - Gough 0.3-0-0-1 - Harmison Ideally a good bowler will go at under 7.5. 41.2-1-237-24 -Starc (5.73) and he isn't Australia's official death bowler as all their bowlers have turns at the death Johnson, Mckay, Cummins, Hazelwood, Faulkner, Watson, Maxwell etc. Rather than 2 bowlers bowling two overs each sometimes Australia have 4 different bowlers. He is probably the best yorker bowler. Starc has played in 46 games. Death bowling update... 41.2-1-237-24 - Starc (5.73) 24.2-0-156-13 - Rahman (6.41) 53.1-0-377-28 - Steyn (7.09) Two of the best death bowlers. Last edited by 1000yardstare : 6th July 2016 at 01:03. |

During the 10/11 Ashes England got the ball to reverse as early as the 11th over in one Test. When the Australians next came to England all the fast bowlers were hiding the ball in their run up, something new. Only Harris was able to hide it until the last minute but he didn't do it all the time. |

In fairness 1000ys you should have removed the later edition Tremlett and Bresnan from the list of 'fast bowlers' in terms of the pace that they bowled. Indeed Tremlett jacked it in last year in any case.

Our bowlers really all bowl at the same pace, anything from 80-90. They can all get it up to 90-93 but no one bowls at over 90mph consistently. Our fastest is Stokes. The Australians are the only side who do have pace and at one time had Harris, Johnson, Starc, Pattinson, Cummins. |

If I was a junior cricket coach nowadays and saw a kid pick up a ball and run in, I'd go up to him, take the ball off him and hand him a bat instead.
