Let's call him Andy Flower.

I went with Foster, marginally ahead of Read for his batting.

I'm not sure his mother - Mrs Other - will be happy about that. He's aspired to the fringes of playing for England and you want to call him Flower?

Unfortunately Daz, Read has proven that he has not got the technique to bat at 7 in a modern Test cricketing side. Should we persist with Read, we would be forced to make compromise elsewhere with the batting line up, either in playing him lower down the order, in which case who would occupy that Modern-7 slot? Or we accept the risk that he will neither be able to hold up an end, or indeed progress the scoring whilst batting, despite the undoubted benefit of being able to stop three byes an innings.

If you have got to rely on the keeper to score runs then yes we should compromise with the batting line up and get batsmen that will score runs.

Anyone but Read or G.Jones. Both proven failiures at the top level.

Where's Wessels on that list?

As a wicket-keeper Read is a proven success.

I think I should. But I voted Nixon to annoy Michelle.

I've gone for Foster. Although I back Read over Jones, Read won't do the job we all want unless we went for a six specialist batsmen Fred + 3 bowlers routine where Read would actually make a good number 8.

As a question asked in isolation (as it is here), "Who should keep wicket in the first test" should obviously be answered by "The best wicketkeeper available". I think this is Chris Read and for several years now I have heard no one dispute this. Hence the mystery is: why would anyone answering this poll have chosen anyone but Chris Read in answer to this question? Are there England fans out there who, all other things being equal, would prefer for us unnecessarily to drop catches and award byes to the opposition? If so, then golly and yikes. For my part I shall assume that THE RESULTS OF THIS POLL HAVE ALMOST NOTHING TO DO WITH THE QUESTION THAT WAS ASKED. I suspect, incidentally, that this is more or less an accurate general rule for polls, which is of course why they are such a vital aspect of the functioning of our crippled democracy.

I suspect that many of those answering this poll have had their answers constrained by questions other than the one proposed. For example, perhaps many if not most have actually answered the unasked question: "Who should bat at number seven in the first test?", or rather (since the batting order can be sensibly altered by e.g. the promotion of a nightwatchman etc.), "Who should be listed on the scorecard at number seven in the first test?".

I would be interested to hear other readers' suggestions of what question it might have been that respondents have been answering instead of the stated question.

In the meantime, assuming that the actual question is to do with the no. 7 batting spot and thus has no necessary connection with wicketkeeping at all, I would like to propose that Freddie Flintoff become England's wicketkeeper for the first test match. If the duties of being wicketkeeper are fully discharged by batting well at no. 7 -- and as far as I can tell from the media and the messageboards this is almost certainly the case -- then being wicketkeeper will in no way interfere with Fred's ability to bowl his heart out. Who will wear the gloves and stand behind the stumps while the opposition are batting is a completely different matter. For this probably currently irrelevant role I propose Chris Read, because he did it for us in the last two test matches in extraordinarily accomplished fashion.
