SA score 303 at Kanpur today although even with the extra fielder out, when the boundaries are so short it doesn't make much difference.

I've only just switched on and just seen the score. I saw some brief highlights on SSN and indeed the boundaries are tiny.

A few recent odis haven't seen 300+ scores. Start of a trend back to lower totalswith the new regs? Consequence of slower pitches in India and Zimbabwe than in the world cup? Or just variation within the mean?

Definitely the new regs, plus I guess for the World Cup teams concentrate solely on ODI cricket for months so get rather good at it (except England).

Much talk of how the last ODI in India was a high scoring ground based on one game but SA defended 270 handily enough.

They had picked a pretty good bowling line up though.

I think we can conclude that 438 is probably over par.

Teams have scored 350 or more 19 times in ODIs this calendar year. This is the record, beating 2007 when it happened on 9 occasions.

I think I know where you got that from. Thanks to kys and cricinfo from Ali. Is an interesting stat though, isn't it? Would be vaguely useful to know whether it's from more ODIs this year or not. Your turn to do the research, Ali?

Other interesting thing is that while Pakistan fell well short in the end, at no point before the 9th wicket fell had the run rate needed got up much above 7. Clearly they were playing risky cricket to sustain that scoring rate but it certainly looked from both innings as if par was over 300. As in, the huge number of runs scored aggregate weren't just because Buttler played a blinder.

I won't go through all the games from both years but 2007 was obviously also a CWC year. In that tournament, there were 6 scores over 350, four of which were against associates. There were 7 such scores in the last tournament, 3 against associates and 4 v test nations.*

*which includes the West Indies smashing 372 v Zimbabwe.

Does the two balls (therefore harder throughout), fielding restrictions or power plays have the most impact?

Two scores of over 300 posted by India in each of their innings batting first, two successful and facile chases by Australia.

I don't think there is enough interest for the Aus v India ODI series to merit a thread on it's own but yet again it provides material for this thread. Australia have posted 348 and India are currently India are 259-1 off 35 overs.

This has been a remarkable and amusing choke from India. They have now lost 5 wickets for very few and look like they could well lose.

What those Indian players need is exposure to the ipl. It will teach them how to finish tight games in front of big crowds. Or something like that.

May not have helped the Indians but it has undoubtedly benefited the ten Australian players who have played in it. The only player to have not yet got a game in the ipl was statistically the worst Australian bowler. Conclusive.

Debateable, perhaps, but hardly conclusive.

Perhaps he didn't get a game in the IPL because he wasn't good enough.
