Selection Panel V: The ECB Strikes Back

Two years of Selection Panel IV and The New Hope is well and truly dead. As such here we go again with a Summer of discovering that our enemy may well be our father after all with Dizzy tipped for the coach's role.

In the meantime we have series against New Zealand starting next week so time to speculate on the side that starts at Lords.

I reckon:

Lyth
Cook
Ballance
Bell
Root
Ali
Buttler
Stokes
Jordan
Broad
Anderson

I would like

Lyth
Cook
Ballance
Bell
Root
Stokes
Buttler
Rashid
Wood
Anderson
Daylight then Broad

I'd probably go for:

Cook Root Ballance Pietersen Bell Stokes Buttler Ali Wood Broad Anderson

I think the selectors will go for:

Cook (c) Lyth Ballance Bell Root Ali Stokes Buttler Jordan Broad Anderson

I think England's team (w/ everyone fit) should be

Lyth
Lees
Ballance
Pietersen (c)
Root (vc)
Stokes
Buttler
Ali
Wood
Broad
Anderson

Bell can come in if KP isn't fit

My team

Strauss
Trescothick
Ballance
Bell
Root
Botham
Buttler
Ali
Woakes
Anderson
Broad

Botham to take the new ball with anderson.

If anyone dares to say that I am picking long retired players they can do one because others are picking injured/retired players so I am too.

I think Lyth has to slot in as opener now that Trott is gone. Other than that the question marks are just over the no. 6 and the non-opening bowlers. I think they will stick with Jordan as third seamer as he seems to be improving and is a real boon in the field. I'd have Panesar as the spinner I think, as he's almost certainly the most accurate of the options. For the no. 6 I'd want a specialist batsman, and I'm not sure that Ali is as good as for example Taylor, Hales, Davies, Hildreth. I'd take any of those, and there are probably others in the frame too. I'd not worry at all about playing batsmen for England out of normal county position -- if the next best batsman is normally an opener but the vacancy's at 6, he can bat there. Also I'd not worry about age at all -- though I'd not be wanting to pick anyone who's dead, retired, or injured. It seems a shame to drop Ali and Stokes but I don't think either of them is yet quite good enough to be picked as a batsman or a bowler. I also think that the county "circuit" is a good place to improve.

Nobody has picked a retired player in their team except you.

Surprised to see anyone recommending we don't select the only proven test class opener we have. It feels like people are comfortable making a selection based on considerations other than cricketing merit.....

Based, perhaps, on his not appearing to be a big mate of Pietersen?

Cook
Lyth
Ballance
Root
Bell
Stokes
Buttler
Plunkett
Tredwell
Broad
Anderson

Possibly the most boring XI in memory but I think it's the best balanced.

I'd go along with that, with one exception.

Don't think it'll be too far from what we see either.

Fair enough to pick on my most controversial selection.

I think Lees is the better long term option than Lyth who I think may be found out outside off stump.

When is the squad supposed to be announced?

Do the ECB care anymore?
