It's Lords in May and even some of the best spinners we have had since the days of uncovered pitches, haven't done a right lot there until late June. Wish they would leave the selection until closer the date. It was ****ing it down in Bedfordshire this morning but a great warm afternoon. Nything like that for the next couple of days and Jimmy could have a field day. So could Southee and Boult though.
Woakes has still not come back from the injury that he sustained at the World Cup MC. I get the feeling we could be seeing a low scoring series.

Are you saying that because Woakes is missing as a batsman or as a bowler?

Neither but you knew that. I don't think NZ play the moving ball too well, but then again I am unconvinced that several of the England upper order do either. For all the talk that NZ will have several players undercooked, few of England's test side (Mo Ali?) will have played first class cricket since returning from the Caribbean.

Not Moeen Ali - he's got over twice as many fc wickets as Wood.

A much better batting order. Stokes, Buttler and then Ali. It's surprising how many left-handed batsmen we now have. Seven! I can't remember the last time we had so many.

It's looking much better because they've all scored runs! That's probably not particularly because of whether Moeen is at 6, Stokes 7 and Buttler 8 or Stokes, Buttler then Moeen.

Turned out to be a pitch which consistently offered something to bowlers yet became the highest scoring result match ever at lords.

A great game and I'm chuffed I headed across town. That's sport for you I guess. England were 30-4 and I didn't feel there was a way out and my fears seemed true at that point. I can't speak highly enough of the way England played themselves out of trouble in both innings. As I've said on the match thread, despite a parlous situation on the 3rd day I somehow felt that given a bit of concentration, allied to some enterprise a real last day spectacle had an opportunity of arising.

I'm just wondering if perhaps some of the England players, especially the batsmen should be getting a first class game or two ahead of the Ashes rather than playing for the ODI team. I would sincerely hope that Cook, Bell, Ballance, Anderson and Broad don't play for the limited overs side. Perhaps with a few weeks between now and the Ashes some of these could get some county cricket under their belts.

Ballance probably shouldn't be in the ODI team for this series but that's a form rather than class issue. He's got the game to be contending with Vince, Morgan, Taylor etc for those batting spots left after Stokes, Hales, Roy and Buttler.

If Broad doesn't play, have we enough bowlers?

I would have thought that the likes of Jordan along with Finn, Wood and dare I say it the likes of Pivotal Timmy should make up the seamers for the ODI series.

So that'll be a no then.

We haven't had enough bowlers for a long time in ODIs. I absolutely would not play either Broad or Anderson in those games though.

I wonder if they'll give Boyd Rankin another go in the one day series?
