Steve Smith must have a great chance to get past AB (and Kane Williamson) in the batting list but less sure even this sterling return will quite get Ashwin past Steyn.

I assume Steyn loses a few points for missing the test. It's still a 90 point gap, assuming the rankings are up to date before this test.

Loses 1% rating per test missed, so bigger question is whether Ashwin can make up 80 points in one, albeit hugely successful game. It's possible he's played few enough tests that there isn't enough drag to prevent him but I think unlikely.

Now having looked at his wickets I think he might not get there. He's got the number 1 batsman out twice but Amla only once. The only two SA batsmen in the top 20.

Also a very low scoring game, which makes a difference too.

Oddly enough he tends to look ordinary in Aussie conditions.

Most spin bowlers do, especially those in touring teams.

He looked moderately ordinary when England toured in 2012 too. Other than that he's been a monster in India though.

I think he's a better bowler than then to be honest. He uses his body more and can gain more fizz off the pitch. He also doesn't muck around with all these daft variations that he did and changes of action, some styles bordering on the illegal. I know it was still on the subcontinent, but he had a fine series in Sri Lanka earlier this year when before then his overseas record was utterly woeful.

SA made 3 changes - still no Steyn, Piedt for Harmer, Abbott for Radaba, Bavuma for Van Zyl. This pitch looks a bit more normal than the others, flatter to start and will break up later. A couple of innings of 300 or so should be expected.

Interesting start to the 3rd test. Early reprieve from Abbott who overstepped. But SA have bowled very tightly and kept India from getting away before Piedt took a couple and Abbott one. Both bowled impressively at times.

Now Abbott has one dropped off his bowling. By the captain no less.

Again not much application by the batsmen. Abbott deserved a wicket from this spell though

Yes Abbott has been excellent.

Poor batting from India though - indeed it has been a horrible series for them. I do wonder if the previous generation of Indian batsmen would have struggled this badly even on the same pitches. These guys are just utterly clueless against spin. Not great against pace either but I'm just staggered at how incompetent they look against any sort of spin - without taking anything away from the spinners they've faced, it is not like they've been up against a Warne, Swann or Murali in the last couple of years.

From what was possibly the first ball he'd ever faced from Dane Piedt. Incredible.

It's important to show the bowler who is the boss.

Tahir only 7 overs, was he injured or a luxury item or maybe SA should have played 3 fast bowlers and Piedt?
