91-4 now. Cook has just fallen to Steve Finn, who has 2-25. According to George Dobell Mark Footitt is off the field.

Correction: Cook is still in. SA A are 99-6, Finn has four wickets and looks to be ahead in the race to play on Boxing Day.

He may have played whatever happened in this match as the senior player, I'd say he's a lock to play now.

These SA bowlers aren't very good, Hales has got to 11.

Do you think he might be carrying an injury?

Anyway, I'm please Broad has another run-out. He's a bowler who needs yards in the legs.

I know you're not being serious, but this is one of the better bowling line-ups England have faced in a tour match for a while. Both opening bowlers are internationals and their first change has 200+ wickets at 21.

Had it been a 13 over game he would have played but with the 2 back to back games I guess him being undercooked was preferable to the others being undercooked. Broad we know definitely needs overs as does Finn.

I tkink that just about seals the team for next weekend, doesn't it? Finn in, as oppsed to Footit or Woakes. I think Baistow will be peferred to Buttler. Compton will bat at 3. Whether we like it or not, I can't see them doing any thing else other than bring in Anderson for Footit. We all have our favourites and dislikes but, barring injury, can anyone se yhem playing anyone else. The Saffer team selrction will be more intersting. They have a few guys there I have hard of. AB, Amla, Steyn (if fit), Morkel (JP?)and a couple of others. Anybody know anything much about the rest?

hmmm not particularly great signs for South Africa that the backup batting haven't exactly thrust their names into the ring. I say that thinking about the numerous question marks hanging over several of those currently in possession.

I think Finn is a class act and should therefore play if fit. But if he plays there's then a question about the balance of England's attack. Broad and Anderson can bowl dry, but there's a definite release of pressure when they come off.

Do we need to look at Stokes and Ali's postions again? I'd be loathed to leave out Stokes, but are England a better balanced team with Woakes playing ahead of him?

I can't see a better spin bowling option available than Ali, but might we be better with Woakes to keep it tight instead of Moeen's wicket-taking threat and just pick the best bowlers rather than the best spinner?

Or if Moeen Ali can open the batting in the UAE can Woakes open the batting in South Africa and be a Shane Watson deluxe?

Alas, Moeen Ali was **** opening the batting in the UAE so that entire premise is flawed.

You're often loathed, gbg, as would the selectors be if they left out Stokes. Interesting musings but don't really see the merit in Woakes replacing either all rounder currently in possession. While I think he's a tighter and technically more correct batsman than Ali, don't think that gets him up to opener.

England sprung a surprise by picking Mark Footitt for this second and final warm-up match even though he appeared to bowl himself out of Test contention with a nervy display in his first senior match for his country in Potchefstroom.

The theory is that England wanted him to get more overs into his legs in case he is needed with the new ball as the series goes on but the newcomer again looked a little out of his depth here even though he took an early wicket.

All 6 of our fast bowlers are new ball bowlers.

Can't believe that there is only a 2 day break between Tests. They don't want to be bowling last in the 1st Test and first in the 2nd Test.

Most overs bowled in a Test
Ali 52.0
Anderson 61.0
Stokes 52.0
Broad 58.5
Finn 50.3

Steyn 57.0
Morkel 50.0
This was against England at Newlands last time.

Not quite 180 but not far off. Some batsmen seem to have issues like that, Gatt was often lbw padding up, and I reckon Gooch used to do it to. Certainly something to work on.

I don't think it's anything to worry out. Jimmy is very experienced and knows his body better than most and the type of preparation required. In addition, he is probably saving himself for the back-to-back tests. I agree with KYS that 2 days between tests is ludicrous.
