West Indies in Australia

First of three tests started last night and the Aussies have thrashed their way to 438/3 at close. Not really sure why the Windies have been given three tests. A far more sensible approach would be just the one test, maybe three ODIs and five T20Is. Hammerings like this devalue the test game.

Very sadly, I can't but agree. It may even be that they are below Bangladesh now, who have shown signs of real improvement, albeit largely at home.

Pretty sad to see the state of windies cricket, theres a lack of pride with the newer generations, the hungers not there, theres no intensity or fight, they look beat before the games started, its actually sad to watch.
West indies days in test match cricket might be over sooner than later im afraid.

It is horrible to watch the West Indies out of their own conditions. No fight and passion. They are just about competitive at home but away from home they are more laughable than Australia.

They lack bowlers with accuracy or guile, pace or spin. The fielders lack intensity. Their batsmen lack skill and patience to build innings. All in all, it would be really commendable if they are able to make Australia bat a second time in either one of the 3 tests.

Since most of the best sides in the world have a tendency to be woefully inept in alien conditions, it's hard to see how to level the playing field.
Maybe all tests should be played in the UAE, which is away from home for all test sides?

Is Samuels unable to bowl, does anyone know?

Except Pakistan, who has adopted UAE as home for their cricket.

Yes Samuels was banned from bowling a few months ago. There is a sad inevitability about this but let's not forget, England couldn't beat the Windies not long ago and as you say Sans, they aren't alone in getting hammered like this away. Nonetheless, the coach always having his hands tied as to who he can pick never helps.

yes England and nz have had similar days to this in Australia, although that is not to say WI test cricket is not in turmoil. Generally though, surely the onus is on the away teams to find a way of being more competitive on their travels - they should know by now the type of pitches/conditions they are likely to encounter, so they need to devise a strategy and select a squad that is best suited to cope with it. Usually that is what happens over time

I wonder where exactly Craig Overton meant when he told Ashar Zaidi to “go back to your own ****ing country” ...

Mmm. I'm not sure this is the best place to discuss this but thanks for the link Sans. This is the first I had heard of the incident and I'm pretty disappointed at the conduct of a young England prospect. The view the ECB operated double standards is beyond reasonable doubt in my view. It's scandalous.

The West Indies have got the 2 most lucrative tests in the Aussie summer at Sydney and Melbourne, which has caused a lot of comment in Australia. Does Chris Gale play anymore?

The Aus Cricket Podcast the other day were making a reasonable case for a series against Ireland being a more competitive option

The Windies are a disgrace. Mainly to themselves but also to the memory of the great teams of the past. Days long gone methinks.

Two average Aussie batsmen on for huge scores here. Playing a Test match should be just that, a Test. This sure isn't.

Early on the second day and many of them look like they don't want to be there. Well, I'm off to bed because I can't be bothered to watch it. Many others will do the same and Tests against them will be poorly attended.

Hi mate, i think Gale has chosen to play in the big bash than play for his country, not sure on the details there but hes not playing for the windies.

Adam Voges gets 269*. If I ruled the ICC as a consequence I would strip the match immediately of test status. I'm not even sure Sir Virgs would want to big him up even though I have no doubt he has a humungus test average (76.83).

That's almost Bradmanesque
