The two batsmen most "under threat" in the Enland batting line up? For entirely different reasons. One is questioned for his defensive technique, the other can't seem to get the ball off the ssquare.

Smith making the case that the Saffers should use Compton in their favour. Make him hog strike to frustrate the other batsmen and also help the bowlers settle into comfortable lines and lengths.

Is that the same smith who tweeted how excited the saffers were that compo was going to play rather than Kp? How did that first test go smithy?

Good start for England they now need to aim to bat once.

Glad to see that GLC hasn't reappeared this morning to keep trying and bait MF!

First sign of aggression by Compton but does he have the shots in his repertoire?

Think Compton heard you - whips out a paddle sweep.

Edit: And now a six!

Is there still room in the T20 squad for Compton?

All of a sudden, England seem to be upping the scoring rate.

And I only just switched back on after lunch, so have to talk in hindsight - but surely you should have more than two slips to Hales in a new session. Is Amla already on the defensive?

This is good..presume we won the toss. Captain Cook continues to go early but it doesn't appear to affect us negatively.

Everyone has rushed to judgement with Compton.

He'll never be a dasher, but he's far from Matthew Hoggard out there. In the first test he was playing the pitch and match (and career) situation. This time round we should see what he can do on a good pitch under less pressure.

Hales looks shaky against spin.

And this is average spin.

Trouble is we've only seen one approach from him in his career to date so hard to judge otherwise. Good signs this afternoon however.
