I am sure that money is much more of a motivator for young Mr Broad - it isn't as though he has lacked national recognition whilst at Leicestershire.
not so. Warwickshire offered him considerably more than Notts.

Well, I meant in the future. Perhaps it's easy for me to say that he shouldn't be moving to another county just for the money. He has a good international future ahead of him and will get a contract eventually, with hopes of playing for England for 15 years or so. Moving to Notts from Leics now for short term gain seems a bit pointless and cynical.

Both him and us will hope he has a long England career. It is by no means a given, however, so it is sensible that he plans for all his various possible futures, including those where he plays a reasonable amount of county cricket.

As such, it makes sense for him to find a county that meets his criteria in terms of money, stage, locality and anything else he regards as a factor.

It's up to him really. Good luck to the lad.

You wouldnt move jobs then for double your salary, better prospects of winning things, far better facilities, higher profile plus sentimental reasons, Michelle? If money was his criteria he could have moved last winter...

Maybe this move avoids moving house? Not sure where he lives exactly but if he is a bit of a home town boy Nottingham may be commutable as it were.

As I said, it's easy for me to say. I suppose it's the inevitable result of two divisions. The days of staying at one county for life are long gone. Eventually all the best players will gravitate to the top division and the difference between the two divisions will widen.

P. S. My reasoning was based on Broad having a good future as an England player - I would expect players with little prospect of playing for England to be looking to make as much as possible from county cricket. As has been pointed out re Broad, though, nothing's certain, he can't take an England career for granted, and I acknowledge he has to think about all eventualities in choosing a county.

Of course, it's one of his Dad's old counties. Wonder if that played a part in his thinking. Neil Fairbrother is his agent so I'd like to think he's been well advised.

He also has to account for the fact that he only has 15 years earning power and that he could be injured and finished tomorrow - better to be knackered for three years on 100k than 50K!!

Two division gulf is now wide and will widen - which is a good thing. Im all for transfers because theres little point creating two divs to raise standards and then have no mechanism for movement between them.

Its not all bad for Leics. If Broad gets a central contract most of the incentive payment/reward (around 100K) now stays with the county of origin.
He could be an earner for them for a few years yet.

He has only 15 years earning power as a professional cricketer. However that does not mean that his working life is over. He's a very articulate young man and it would not surprise me if he went into the media. Alternatively he may go into officiating, coaching, being an agent who knows but he probably won't be sat on his backside living off this cricket earnings.

You're right - a VERY good rule, but are the new county compensated for absence?

That is a good rule. I wonder if Bedfordshire get anything for Monty?

Yes. But they get a much smaller % than the home county.

Notts is a very attractive club with a good coach and very positive outlook. Plus it's a Test ground.
