May be he should bat lower down the order if he cant handle the swinging ball.

Any suggestions?
Wonder when Trescothick will be ready

I think his fans seem to be a bit harsh on him with regards to both his technique against the swinging ball and his ability against spin. He's got out to some top class bowlers in the last 12 months but he's still come back to prove that he can cut the mustard, especially in test cricket. He's also shown signs of improving against spin as well and there's more to come. I mean we're not talking about a 30 year old here are we. His problems are far less severe compared to say Ian Bell who seems to find new ways of getting out all the time to often rather ordinary deliveries when on the verge of getting himself in (in tests) rather than an opener who has a habit of nicking rather good deliveries early on.

I stand corrected. Guilty of not checking my facts.

Cook has suffered what happens to a lot of players who come into the game with a bang. He made a century on debut and five centuries in his first 15 tests. Inevitably this level of achievement is unsustainable so there is a falling off, people begin to criticise his technique, opposing bowlers find his weaknesses, etc. It should just be a blip while he sets himself to what international cricket is really about once it ceases to seem so easy. Other players take the opposite route, starting indifferently and growing into the role.

Just a quick gloat before I leave...

I've won tickets to the ask.com party tonight! Alastair should be there, along with four of the other England lads...we're all hoping the four will be IRB, Jimmy, Stuart Broad and Colly!!! Although whoever turns up will be a treat. Really nervous! Hope Alastair's in a good mood - scores of 0, 4 and 0 in the last three games... ...

p.s. The invitations are really , it's a Cook face mask with the details on the back!

Judging by the tone of this thread it may take some while before she wants to post on this subject.

Maybe the selectors will be spared a difficult decision with Cook ruled out with back and groin problems?

So you got Cookie's phone number (possibly Bell too), big deal...

Or, there's something far more intriguing that we need to know!

Talking

Apologies. There was free alcohol at the do last night and so I've just woken up...and writing this was harder than I thought it'd be, not even sure it makes sense!

Where to start...hmmm. We turned up not knowing what to expect, and it was a little quiet to begin with, so we sat and sipped on our wine, champagne...and beer! Everyone there seemed to know everyone else and we felt a little out of place, but then we recognised a few from the Alastair facebook group...started chatting with them and that's when the boys arrived. We were told it would be Alastair and four others (in some ways it was, but more about that later), but we got five! Colly, Monty, Ravi, Dimi and Ian Ronald Bell.

We were trying to pluck up the courage to go and speak to one of the players, but luckily the matter was taken out of our hands when Colly just appeared in front of us. He was looking good...and when that accent of his tumbled out of his mouth, you could practically see the drool coming out of ours (the ladies of course, the blokes were more concerned about how he gets his hair to stick up like that..)!

Next up was Dimi - pirate! We asked him why he didn't hit that first ball for six - cue a shrug of shoulders followed by a big, cheesy grin and something about it being unfortunate! We didn't know what to say to him for we were staring at his ear rings!

Alastair walked by and I managed to shake his hand and introduced myself as the creator of his facebook group - ''YOU have a lot to answer for, I'll speak to you in a while!'' he replied and walked off!

Monty was next! We spotted him going to the bathroom and we had a sudden alcohol-related urge to stand outside his cubicle door and surprise him when he walked out...but, thankfully we came to our senses. Monty (bless him) was more shy about meeting us, than we were of meeting him! We all caught on and decided to be gentle with him. Just simple chit-chat, just anything to try and get him to relax!

We spotted the Bell and hung back until he'd finished chatting to a lady...only he didn't finish all night...he'd brought his girlfriend (no, I'm not sure what happened to his fiancee either...unless this was her and none of us had realised!?) along. Not impressed.

Ravi was next! He's got to be the most friendliest and most open bloke we met last night, just lovely and funny. We chatted about our 'hood Ilford - ''I'll see you around'', his thumb - should take ''three weeks'' to heal, not going to the twenty20 finals - ''sh*t happens'' and the Sri Lanka tour. There was a lad who was part of our 'group' who had had a little too much to drink and asked 'who's the better coach DF or PM?'. Ravi replied (after a little hesitation), with a cool ''they are both different, you can't compare''!

Finally - the man himself...he apologised for the moment before, apparently he HAD to speak with James Cracknell - oh yeah, we met him too. We jumped straight into a conversation about the facebook group - and basically he has seen it, loves it and wants us to keep going! This was followed by lots more random chat and more blushing, plus photos! Much better looking in the flesh and so charming.

...and then we heard that they'd be leaving in five minutes and we still hadn't spoken to Ian! So we ran to the exit of the room to catch him as he left but no - he was already out of the room, had his hoody on and was walking off! We followed, as you do..but we lost him. He was nowhere to be seen. Why come and not socialise?!

Apart from the whole IRB thing - it was a fantastic night! We bumped into Ade Adepitan as well, he's lovely too. I've probably missed lots out, so if there's any questions - ask away!

p.s. No, I didn't get his number...the closest I got was an arm around the waist for the photo. Oh well!

Most impressive! I'm still unclear as to how you got the ticket in the first place, mind...
