I would like to think so, but in honesty i am not sure.

A hundred is a hundred nonetheless, however it was a flat wicket and cant expect to play on featherbeds every game. Just look how he has been found out in Sri Lanka.

But just because he it a hundred I dont think it has cemented his place in the team.

I would open with Wright, although Wright and Mustard opening, i cannot see a huge opening partnership round the corner!
I do agree that 1 hundred doesnt make his spot safe but I prefer Luke Wright to come down the middle order - he's a specialist end of innings hitter and thats where he's proven himself in ODI's. He's done well in county level opening but ODI's are different.

Mind you if cookie is in trouble to keep his spot what about KP??? He's been so disappointing! Should we drop him as well?

I thought Luke Wright only started getting runs once he was brought up the order for Sussex and got them off to flying starts.

I will be very disappointed if Cook is dropped and Collingwood has said that he has to look at the wicket before deciding on the team so he might make a change or even two.

Would love to see Tressers back in the team but is he mentally ready for it again? It was a massive blow when he had to leave - just killed the morale of the side when it happened.

Didnt we lose 0-5 to Sri Lanka with him in the team?

Its a valid argument that a hundred on a featherbed is different from runs scored on a helpful wicket, but he is the established test opener - if he can't cope with a swinging/seaming ball who can?

The thing is he can leave and defend in tests, in ODI's hes under pressure to score quicker.

Not if its seaming and swinging, as you've got to adjust your totals according to the conditions. In fact it can be an advantage to have someone who can see off the new ball and set a platform for the shot-players to increase the run-rate from once conditions have eased.

He's by no means the finished product, but if England are building for the next world cup he should play and develop his game.

At this stage of the match, Cook is now England's leading run scorer with 111 runs, ahead of Shah's 108 - the only two players to reach 3 figures. If England wrap this up without Shah having to bat Cook will retain the lead. Not bad going for someone people think is not suited to the game.

He was the top scorer in the first match which England lost and that perhaps counted against him. There was a lot of ridiculous stuff about him scoring those runs too slowly, as if that mattered when everyone else got out cheaply. If we win this he will surely be Man of the Match.

Not for long. If cricinfo are up to date, Cook's still ahead 127-117.

This knock would have boosted Cook's confidence.

I'd like to see Cook & Shah opening the batting for England, but with one of them instructed to strike out at the bowling. Surely a fully fledged batsman should be able to adapt his technique to slog it better than a wicket keeper can?? After all, I've seen Chris Tavare of all people could score quickly in one dayers!

Indeed he did, despite Angus Fraser wanting Sidebottom to get it.

Cook definitely deserved MoM today. He dug in well to keep us steady. Just a shame he couldn't make it to the end.

The only players who don't have MOMs yet are Panesar (25 matches), Tremlett (8), Sidebottom (7), Mascarenhas (7), Mustard (4) and Wright (2). but they haven't played that many games and Sidebottom could have easily got one today. If we keep the same group of players they should all have one before too long.
