What do you mean, "sod the lot of you"?! I've started this thread precisely because I am a big admirer of Ian Bell and am looking forward to him enhancing his reputation in the India series. (And I hope I am not tempting providence in saying this).

So here are some stats that you will enjoy.
Bell as:
Opening bat: inns 2, runs 26, hs 18, avg 13
Batting at 3: 18, 634, 92, 35.22
Batting at 4: 13, 492, 162*, 44.72
Batting at 5: 2, 91, 70, 45.50
Batting at 6: 12, 591, 119,73.87
Batting at 7: 1, 11,11, 11.

Apart from the time he came in at 7, possibly because he'd been off the field or something, note how the average moves up as the batting position moves down. I thought this might appeal to you.

I'd suggest that the average at 6 would have something to do with the numerous not out 100s. But don't let me spoil the fun.

Even if you take out the not outs, he still has an average of 49.25 at 6.

He has played 18 innings as a no. 3 bat and his average is only 35.22 and no hundreds in that position. Ten of those innings were in the Ashes last winter, rather a stern test after doing so well at 6 v. Pakistan last summer. But hopefully he will move up the order eventually and consolidate his claim.
So Bell should bat at 3 because "he wants to bat at 3"? Sorry Michelle, but this is pretty poor reasoning especially given the stats you posted further on down the thread.

For me he just doesn't cut it as a number 3 in either form of the game (yet). However his record at number 6 is outstanding and that's where he should stay for the time being. I fear if Strauss is dropped to accomodate Flintoff's eventual return Bell will be reinstated at first drop and he'll continue to struggle.

I imagine most batsmen would be delighted to have numerous not out 100s.

Of course, but that was not the point. In any case my point was clinically shot down by JD.

I know that but the comment sort of left itself open to that response.

Bell may have Rikki Clarke and Stuart Broad as team mates at Warwicks next year.

More home grown talent at Edgbaston?

If you are going to be like that Nathan, we'll come for Bopara next.

Apparently Clarke has been told he can talk to other counties. We've long been rumoured to be interested. He also has a house in the area.

= Rikki Clarke

Essex are no strangers to filching talent from other counties. Childs, Such, Garnham, Andrew, Middlebrook, Grayson, Irani....

We also filched Tudor, but only because no-one else wanted him.

I'm surprised Surrey are letting Clarke go, maybe his face didn't fit?
