Apart from Godleman, Lyth and Finn I think our U-19 prospects look a bit crap.

to be fair Dan Redfern is just 17 still, however he looks rather intimidated whenever i've seen him play.

i thought Hamilton Brown had something about him.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread (at least I think I did), I reckon this is a pretty promising under 19s side.

Wakely hit a hundred in the first game, but hasn't done a whole lot since.

We tend to struggle against other U-19 teams in any case. Did well to get that first 'Test' win, tbh

I only saw Hamilton-Brown bowl off-breaks. Never had the chance to see him bat. Though statistically the highest score he made during this ODI series was 33 so I guess I didn't really miss much.

I'm more interested in the batting prowess of the U-19's than the bowling. They're probably not physically developed enough to judge whether they might be decent pace bowlers. Having said that Finn looked quality. Well developed for his age I would imagine at 6ft 8" (!!), bowling at 84 mph, bowling a really good off-stump line and reasonable lengths. He just looked a proper bowler.

Anyway, 2 decent prospects out of 11 is a good return I think. 1 or 2 batsmen and 1 bowler. The finger spinners haven't a hope in hell of progressing onto the highest level.

I think you are right Rosbif - it's pretty hard to judge how the youngsters will develop as pace bowlers, also probably the same for the spinners. Much more relevant/interesting to see the techniques and mental application of the batsmen.

I wonder how many of this team will be eligible for the U19 WC this year (you have to be under 20 by Sept 1st) - I'm looking forward to Aus thrashing England!

It is because it was a OD series and they use the Kookaburra white ball in ODIs. So they wanted to use the nearest thing to a white Kookaburra.....which was a red Kookaburra! I caught one of the commentators explaining that.

I think a couple of them might be too old by then.

What are the young Australians like anyway? Cricinfo won't let me see the last centre of excellence tour.

Don't forget that Wright and Harris went playing in the ODI series. Wright due to injury and Harris due to a bowling crisis at Glamorgan.

Godleman must have some kind of record for run outs. I think he has run out most of the team.
He comes across as a right geezer. Pity about the run outs, I imagine it is quite difficult to run two people out without facing in two days.

Ben Brown, Wakely, Westley and Dawson will go on to play county cricket to a decent standard, I am pretty sure of that. Godleman and Finn are the best prospects of all of them

daz why do you care what is said about players? All that matters is what they do. If Wakely does well at Northants, and I mean really does well, not just be a mediocre and average county player, he will get recognition. Its probably better for players to go about starting their careers with absolutely no hype and expectation on them anyway, so in many respects I think it is to his and any other players advantage.

I don't think he cares particularly, just pointing out that there are fashionable counties and unfashionable ones...

He keeps getting run out by Godleman anyway.

Hard to get much news on the U19's - the Centre of Excellence is generally for guys the next level up.

One to look out for is Phil Hughes who is a LH batsman, who opens for his club but seems comfortable anywhere in the order. We recently played a 5-match OD series against the Pakistan U19 side (a pretty testing opponent at youth level) and he top scored for Aus in every innings apart from one (he got second best score in that one!). He averaged 97 in that series at a strike rate of 96 and seems a pretty rare talent (jinx). Plus he comes from NSW so he’s a shoe-in for an Aussie cap!

Other names who might play for us include:
Michael Hill (Vic) a middle order batsman and handy swing bowler who is doing well for the AIS in India at the moment (he didn’t do much in the Pakistan series though)
Daniel Burns (NSW) left arm orthodox spinner who can keep it pretty tight in the middle overs.
Kumar Sarna (Vic) a handy, but perhaps inconsistent, RH opening batsman. His game might not be quite as suited to the shorter format though.
Steven Smith (NSW), legspinner who didn’t do much in our last underage domestic comp, but has been earmarked by the selectors as a likely sort.
Shaun Austin (Qld), allrounder who bats right handed and bowls medium pace and seems pretty useful in both departments.
James Pattinson (Vic), right arm fast bowler who performed well in the last underage domestic comp.

Kumar won't ever play for Australia unless he changes his name to a proper Aussie name, ie. Shane, Steve, Bruce etc. Sad but true.
