If you accept Fletcher's point - which I largely don't but neither was he completely incorrect - then you either opt for an all seam attack (very English and flawed), search around desperately for a (probably inadequate if you're England) legspinner or, alternatively, pick a bits and pieces player who can send down a few overs of defensive off spin (Fletcher's view).

Or you do what actually happened under Fletcher and pick one of the above options or pick a specialist finger spinner who can't bat or field and go for the option you think of as the least bad at any given time. There might be some debate about it on occasion, of course.

Why don't you largely accept Fletcher's point? Nominate a conventional finger spinner in test cricket in the last twenty years who provides a decent counter argument, let alone a refutation. I happen to think that generally a side badly needs a spinner and clearly he ought to be one who can bowl in an attacking vein at least on occasion but then that's not inconsistent with Fletcher's argument.

I wouldn't want to see someone who has played at international level for another country playing for England.

Not opposed to it on principle, and am happy to accept that he's chosen to make the UK his home. However, I'm not sure whether that's more because he was axed by the Pakistan side for underachieving. And that's where I'd ask serious questions about Saqlain for whichever country he chooses to play for.

Makes me think Joyce and Ireland. 10 runs in his first match against them and in the World Cup 1 run and dropped a simple catch. It can be a subconscious thing.

Though Joyce was on the way up, England nabbed him after he'd excelled for Ireland. And he had no choice when it came to playing tests. I'd still expect Joyce to feature heavily for England in years to come.

Oh great, yet another 'Saqlain for England' story. Everyone seems to have forgotten that he's absolute ***** these days...

I remember. We'll be juggling snowballs in hell before he plays a test for England.

Very, very good batsman though slightly Ramps like for England so far.

To be fair to him, 18 wickets in 4 FC matches at 17.55 last summer was pretty good. I saw quite a bit of him and he doesn't seem to have lost that much in terms of his bowling, and he can bat a bit. He's not fit enough any more, and certainly not English, so I'll give you that, but he's still a more than useful cricketer

Remember if he was any good he'd still be playing test cricket for Pakistan.

It doesn't. Nor has it ever.
