Catches which win matches. SA drops 10

Amla very lucky but should not twice lucky in the rest of series. If English fielder hold those catches, I doub Feeble SA reaches respective scores at all.

now with 7 wkts in 3 days with the ball, result seems to me tame draw,SA still need 77 to save follow-on,which they will reach after lunch koz Morris [ handy with the bat ] Bavuma,Kock still to bat and 3rd new ball not taken for long time.

SA also dropped 10 catches in last 3 innings.

10 catches dropped by England now in the Cape Town test. That's an absolute embarrassment.

I haven't got the full list to hand but Root dropped two at slip, Compton dropped one at backward point, Jimmy dropped two at slip off the spinners, Finn dropped a caught and bowled and Bairstow put down a straight forward edge behind. What's that, seven? I think Taylor might have shelled a couple at short leg but they were half chances at best.

I usually go by Cricinfo

Anderson - Root
Root - Anderson
Finn - Compton
Broad - Taylor
Finn - Finn
Broad - Bairstow
Broad - Root

There were others
Finn - Taylor, Ali - Anderson, Broad - Bairstow, Ali - Taylor

A keeper takes his position and the slips take their position from him. I just wonder why Bairstow didn't tell Anderson he was too close. His last game was in the UAE where it is better to be closer.

Independent
Bayliss
I’ve seen nine or 10 catches reported, I think it was four or five we should have taken.

It's a poor show when the coaches positive spin on a woeful fielding performance is "we only dropped four or five".

Also the caught and bowled chance Finn dropped was one of those that either stick or don't. Others were much more straight forward.

I think saying there were 10 genuine drops is a tad harsh. I didn't see one that was an absolute sitter (not saying there weren't any). The Finn C&B chance was hard, the Taylor Short Leg chance was hard. There were also a number that went to one hand or went through the fingers, and on another day would have stuck.

If I were Bayliss I wouldn't be doing anything special other than asking the players to ensure they are positioned correctly to give them the best chance of pouching them. No point in hammering the players when they know they should have done better in what were very hot conditions.

I wonder if Stokes could be number 2 in the slip cordan with Root at 3. Also let him be slip to the spinners. He is England best fielder. Anderson can be at mid off where he can spend more time on shining the ball. I don't think England have looked after the ball very
well. The job has been passed on from Bell to Root.

Drops
Woakes to Amla on 2 dropped Bairstow - out for 7 - 5 runs
Broad to van Zyl on 6 dropped Taylor - out for 33 - 27 runs
Ali to de Villiers on 33 missed stumping Bairstow - 4 runs
Anderson to de Villiers dropped on 5 by Root - 83 runs
Root to Amla dropped Anderson on 76 - 125 runs
Finn to Amla dropped by Compton on 120 - 44 runs
Broad to Amla dropped by Taylor on 201 - 81 runs
Finn to Morris on 22 dropped by Finn - 47 runs
Broad to Bavuma on 77 dropped by Bairstow 25 runs
Broad to Morris on 57 dropped by Root - 12 runs
Anderson to Morkel on 12 dropped Bairstow - 0 runs
Broad to van Zyl on 9 dropped Anderson - 2 runs
Stokes to Amla dropped on 5 by Bairstow - 104 runs
Broad to Cook on 47 dropped Bairstow - 68 runs
Anderson to de Kock on 28 dropped Stokes - 101 runs
Woakes to de Kock on 80 not gone for Bairstow -52 runs
Ali to de Kock on 90 dropped by Cook 10 runs

Is there any particular reason for compiling dropped catch statistics since the introduction of 2 balls in ODI cricket?

I can see that there may be with batting and bowling.

No, I had to start somewhere. I first started with the Tests when Collingwood retired in 2011 and it happened that the two ball rule change happened in the same year.

All I can tell is Broad didn't like the change and Anderson did.

Broad 27.08 and 39.48
Anderson 30.89 and 23.98

I don't think it made any difference to the catching.

Bell 34.38 and 44.57
Pietersen 40.82 and 44.18
Morgan 40.45 and 35.90
Cook 38.97 and 34.79

Anderson would like it because he has control of his own ball in his first spell.

It's amazing that slip catches are still going down. Wasn't it Ian Bell who was responsible for all of them last year?

It helps that they replaced him with someone who is equally as culpable in the slips and able to get pretty 30s.
